The Spring Festival travel rush, witnessed by tens of thousands people going home, gets more and more frightening every year. Firecrackers are more extravagant. The Spring Festival eve dinner gets even more delicious. However, most Chinese people feel that the atmosphere of Spring Festival, or Nianwei, is fading. Now, let's learn some customs of the Spring Festival.

Cleaning

In Chinese, the pronunciation of "尘"(dust) and "陈"(stale things) are the same, so cleaning the dust before the Spring Festival eve means kicking poverty and bad luck out of the house. The tradition shows people's hope to bid farewell to the old and greet the new.

Spring Festival couplets

The tradition of pasting Spring Festival couplets on the doors originated during the Song Dynasty and became popular during the Ming Dynasty. The couplets are composed of neat, antithetic, compact and ingenious words to describe society and express good wishes. It is a unique Chinese literary form.

Staying up the whole night

The tradition of staying up the whole night on New Year's eve had two meanings in ancient times. The old stayed up to bid farewell to the old year, which reminds them to cherish every moment of time. While for the young, staying up was an act to show they wish their parents a long life. In modern times, people stay up the whole night to war d off disease and disasters and to wish for good luck in the New Year.

Firecrackers

Firecrackers date back over 2,000 years. The cracking sounds they make are perfect for creating a joyous atmosphere, and thus exploding firecrackers has become an important part of celebrations. They are also thought to bring happiness and good luck.

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。

Producing genuine tears on demand is one of the hardest parts of my job as an actress. Acting teachers will tell you that in order to cry on screen you need to summon up something personal—a fear, an inner secret, a sad experience—that taps into your deepest emotions.

This may sound strange, but the inner secret I use when I need to cry during a movie scene is the image of an elephant. It's an image that haunts me, an image that will remain in my heart and mind for as long as I live.

Two years ago I visited Samburu National Reserve, a wildlife park in Kenya. There, on a guided walk through the bush, I saw my first dead elephant. Poachers had hunted down this magnificent animal before piercing her tough hide(兽皮) with poisoned spears. As if she already knew her fate, the elephant had walked through the bush, the toxins(毒素) coursing through her veins, until she found a quiet place to lie down. When I saw her, her body was lying in the dusty red soil. That moment, the sight of the dead mother and her mutilated(残缺的) body lying under the shade of the tree, changed something inside me. I remember crying for her as I thought about the cruelty and senselessness that had led to her death.

That's why I'm supporting a new United Nations campaign against the illegal trade in wildlife, which is pushing many species—not just elephants—to the edge of extinction in every corner of the world. Under the banner "Wild for Life", this campaign serves to raise awareness about the illegal trade in wildlife and encourage everyone to take action against these crimes. The time for tears is over. The time for action is upon us.

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。

Coffee is probably the world's least expensive success power tool. Coffee builds better teams and increases your leadership ability. Coffee also increases your immunity. Unfortunately, we may not be enjoying the benefits or pleasures of coffee too much longer. According to ecologists, there's a good chance that in 20 or 30 years, the varieties of coffee that we drink today will be extinct(灭绝的). And we'll be drinking a coffee substitute that more or less resembles the drink we enjoy today.

The problem, of course, is the pace of climate change. Successful coffee cultivation has three preconditions: a warm, highly stable(稳定的) tropical(热带的) climate with altitudes that keep air temperature between 18 and 20 degrees Celsius, rich soil full of natural nutrients, and an ecological environment that's pest and disease resistant.

Coffee is a crop that is only grown in a thin band called the "coffee belt" close to the equator (赤道). It simply won't grow anywhere else. Unfortunately, the "coffee belt" is extremely vulnerable to climate change. If the air is too cold or too hot, it prevents the growth of the coffee plant. Climate change also creates environmental stress, which spreads parasites, pests and plant diseases. All of these increase the fragility of the coffee crop and create the possibility of species-destroying rot.

Unfortunately, almost all of these species exist only in Ethiopia, a country that climate change is already hammering. As the environmental nonprofit USAID points out: "Ethiopia is one of the world's most drought-prone countries. The country is faced with numerous development challenges thatexacerbateits weakness facing climate change including increases in temperature, unstable rainfall and unpredictability of seasonal rain, and increased incidences of drought and other extreme events."

In other words, even as climate change threatens coffee as it exists today, climate change is also eating away at the root source which we might turn to for replacement species.

What to do? Well, take the time to savor each cup of coffee you drink. Beyond that, stop electing the politicians who deny climate change.

As we accumulate wisdom in this life, we become competent in handling all the difficulties that present themselves. Wisdom actually allows us to conquer the demands of today's difficult world. But you have to remember: this is a journey and not a destination.

Try Experiencing New Opportunities

You will never grow from being in your comfort zone which is why you need to get out of it. This is the only way you will gain wisdom and become better. You can try learning new skills that you never thought of learning or going to places that were on your bucket list.

Open Yourself To Diverse Perspectives

Sometimes we have biases and they help us out but we need to set them aside most of the time. We need to be receptive to different views, and this will open up new pathways for us. Always develop a sense of curiosity, and observe the world from different angles, it will always help you out. Train your mind to be a judgment-free space for ideas.

Meet New People

Limiting yourself to only one type of people that share the same ideology as you can be comforting but it doesn't get you anywhere in life and that is the truth. Share what defines you and learn from others, and this will make you wiser. Cultivate new friendships, and this will be extremely beneficial for your future.

Never Back Away From Learning

You must be the kind of person who learns something new every day, you must develop a thirst for knowledge. Take new classes, read books, listen to educational podcasts, and the list goes on and on. In the end, you will be able to tackle a problem from different perspectives and angles, making everything easier.

The Pizza Encounter

As Mr. Anderson entered the cozy pizzeria, he couldn't help but feel a sense of excitement for the delicious pizza he was about to enjoy. Dressed in his best suit, he scanned the menu eagerly, his mouth already watering at the thought of the melted cheese. But as he made his way to the counter to place his order, his sense of excitement quickly turned to annoyance when he was rudely bumped into(偶然遇到) by a homeless man named Jack.

Mr. Anderson glared at the man, his eyebrows raised in a look of disgust.

"Watch where you're going! Do you know how expensive my suit is?" he snapped, carefully straightening his suit.

"Oh, I am really sorry," apologized Jack.

Mr. Anderson sniffed(哼了哼) in response, a look of superiority on his face. "Some people," he complained under his breath, as if to say that the homeless man was beneath him.

After ordering three slices of cheeses, Mr. Anderson sat down at a table, feeling annoyed. To his surprise, the homeless man followed and sat down across from him. Mr. Anderson's frown(皱眉)deepened.

When the pizza arrived, Mr. Anderson was about to take a bite, but the homeless man reached out and grabbed a slice. Mr. Anderson's eyes widened in disbelief(难以置信). He had never seen such rudeness.

"Great cheese, right?" said Jack.

Mr. Anderson shook his head. He reluctantly took a bite of his slice, while glaring at the homeless man. However, the man kept reaching for more slices, and Mr. Anderson grew increasingly angry. It went on like this until the last slice, which Jack simply took without asking and handed him half of it. Mr. Anderson exploded with anger, yelling at the homeless man loudly. Mr. Anderson slammed(砸) his fist on the table and continued to yell at Jack, demanding an explanation for his behavior.

Just then, the waiter approached Mr. Anderson with another plate of pizza.

"But why did you give the last slice to me?" asked Mr. Anderson, genuinely curious.
