Carol Heffernan, a 43-year-old woman from Oshkosh, regularly felt worn out from working, sending her two kids to school and playdates, and taking care of housework. But after the COVID-19 hit in March 2020, the kids were suddenly at home all day and learning remotely, her common weariness quickly turned into full-on exhaustion.

"It just added up all the extra responsibility and the mental load," she says. "I felt bad-tempered and tired, and it wasn't due to lack of sleep." If there's one thing many of us have in common, it's that we're tired. Doctors even have a name for it, "tired all the time", or TATT for short. The solution isn't always as simple as getting more sleep. Nearly a quarter of people who get seven or more hours of rest a might report that they still wake up feeling tired most days.

A few weeks after her tiredness set in, Heffernan decided to drop everything and go for a walk, which she hadn't done since the pandemic began, "I just want to be myself," she says. "I need a break." When she returned, she felt recharged and decided to make a habit of it.

Doing something active when you're feelingsluggishwill actually increase your energy, not consuming the little energy that you have. In fact, researchers a Georgia University found that just ten minutes of low or moderate intensity exercise gave study participants a noticeable energy boost. Exercise also works its magic at the cellular level. The mitochondria (线粒体), the parts of cell that provide energy to muscles, can grow more powerful and numerous after aerobic exercise, providing a continuous source of increasing energy to help you work hard.

Now, Heffernan goes for a daily 45-minute stroll. "The walks feed me spiritually, emotionally and physically," she says. "I have something to look forward to every afternoon. I'm in a better mood and I'm also energetic. Of course, getting more exercise isn't the only defense against TATT syndrome."

Can energy drinks really make you energetic? A survey, by Cancer Council Australia among more than 9000 students across the country, found teenagers who werebitten by the energy drinks bugand drank energy drinks at least once a day were twice as likely to get less than eight hours' sleep on school night than those who didn't.

The same survey found one in six teenagers take in at least 5.2kg of sugar each year from sugary drinks alone. "This can lead to weight gain and obesity, increasing the risk of heart and kidney disease, type 2 diabetes, stroke and some cancers," Mr Sinclair said, who led the survey. Craig Sinclair, head of Rethink Sugary Drink, said the levels of sugar in energy drinks are very high, causing teenagers to put on weight.

The survey also found the caffeine (咖啡因) levels of the drinks is also high and this could explain the survey results on their effect on teenage sleep. Energy drinks contain 160mg of caffeine, more than twice as much as a cup of coffee or a 500ml bottle of cola, Mr Sinclair said. The Sleep Health Foundation says teenagers need 8-10 hours of sleep, more than an adult, because their bodies and cognition are growing rapidly. Sleep is important for teen mental health and the US Sleep Foundation says shortage of sleep can contribute to acne, bad behaviour and unhealthy eating habits. Associate Professor Matthew Hoperaft from the Australian Dental Association Victoria said energy drinks are also a major contributing factor to tooth decay and tooth erosion.

Royal Prince Alfred Hospital heart doctor Professor Chris Semsarian has tested the effects of energy drinks on the heart and said they can lead to an increased heart rate and irregular heart beat. "Caffeine is not the only stimulant (兴奋剂) part of these drinks, most also have guarana which is also a stimulant," he said. Energy drinks have been related to scores of deaths around the world because of their high caffeine content.

She is widely seen as proof that good looks can last forever. But, at over 500 years of age, time is    catching up with the Mona Lisa.

The health of the famous picture, painted by Leonardo Da Vinci in 1505, is getting worse by the year, according to the Louvre Museum (卢浮宫博物馆) where it is housed. "The thin, wooden panel on which the Mona Lisa is painted in oil has changed shape since experts cheeked it two years ago," the museum said. Visitors have noticed the changes but repairing the world's most famous painting is not easy. Experts are not sure about the materials the Italian artist used and their current (现在的) chemical state.

Nearly 6 million people go to see the Mona Lisa every year, and many are attracted by the mystery of her smile. "It is very interesting that when you're not looking at her, she seems to be smiling, and then you look at her and she stops." said Professor Margaret Livingstone of Harvard University. "It's because direct vision (视觉) is excellent at picking up details, but less suited to look at shadows. Da Vinci painted the smile in shadows."

However, the actual history of the Mona Lisa is just as mysterious as the smile. Da Vinci himself loved it so much that he always carried it with him, until it was eventually sold to France's King Francis Ⅰ in 1169.

In 1911, the painting was stolen from the Louvre by a former employee, who took it out of the museum hidden under his coat. He said he planned to return it to Italy. The painting was sent back to France two years later.

During World War Ⅱ, French hid the painting in small towns to keep it out of the hands of German forces.

Like many old ladies, the Mona Lisa has some interesting stories to tell.

第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

The summer heat and humidity can make even the most dedicated outdoor runner feel unmotivated. For those who want an alternative to running on the roads without losing their fitness, deep water running, or aqua jogging, could be a useful cross-training exercise. Many runners turn to deep water running as the last resort when they are injured because aqua jogging is not weight-bearing.

To get into this exercise, you will need access to a pool that is deep enough so that your feet don't touch the ground. The depth of the water should be at least five inches less than your height. There are different kinds available to purchase or rent online and at swimming pools. Wear one that feels comfortable.

The best way to aqua jog is to imitate running on land. The movement of your arms and legs should look similar to land-based running. Everything except your head and the top part of your shoulders should be underwater.  But practice a running motion once you feel more confident in your balance and core control.

Runners should treat the first three sessions as a learning experience rather than a hard workout. Workouts can be continuous, easy running or a combination of short bursts at a comfortably hard pace followed by brief periods at an easier active recovery pace. The sessions can be as short as 20 minutes.

As helpful as it is, aqua jogging is not meant to replace all of your regular running. Your heart rate will be slightly lower while aqua jogging for the same level of exercise on land.

A.Work your legs up as you would in a run.

B.Getting used to running in the pool takes time.

C.A cycling action of the legs is easier to start with.

D.Professional instructions are essential for beginners.

E.So increase your speed if you want to increase intensity.

F.It provides tremendous benefits to healthy individuals, too.

G.A flotation belt around your waist will help your running technique.

Bachor was a graphic designer for 20 years before he began his 5 in mosaic. He regards an incidental trip to Europe as his motivation to change careers. While 6 in Italy, Bachor fell in love with Pompeii, a preserved ancient Roman city. A tour guide pointed out a mosaic, made of mainly glass and marble, and told Bachor, "Glass and marble don't 7 . So, this looks essentially the way the artist intended." Bachor says, "That kind of staying power just 8 me so much."

A year later Bachor returned to attend a mosaic class in Ravenna, Italy, to learn the proper way to 9 the ancient technique. Years after that, he mastered the technique. He 10 that mosaics can be just as significant today as the art form over 1,000 years ago. "I just saw that there was a(n) 11 to bring it into the new age as a contemporary subject," he says.

So, Bachor decided to make a special piece of 12  for that pothole. He has 13  mosaic pothole art around Chicago, Detroit, New York City and even in Finland.

Swimmers enjoy cold swims

Many people enjoy swimming in icy cold water. An open-air swimming pool,  (know) as a lido, in Bedfordshire, England, proved very popular this winter. The Woburn Lido is usually open from May to September,  this year it stayed open to swimmers throughout the autumn and winter months too.

Until the lockdown for England was announced on 4 January, outdoor pools were allowed to remain open. "Demand has taken us by surprise," said Murray Heining, a volunteer at the Woburn Lido. Over Christmas and New Year, the lido had to offer extra openings to keep up with the demand from (swimmer).

Cold-water swimming has grown in popularity in the UK over the past few years. A survey found that 7.5 million people in England had swum in outdoor pools, as well as lakes, rivers and the sea, in 2018. In some areas, such as the river Wharfe in Yorkshire, this new trend has made environmental groups think more about  the water is cleared of pollution and clean enough for bathers.

Some people make it a regular practice; just enjoy a refreshing dip on Christmas Day, Boxing Day or New Year's Day. Every year around the UK, people (photograph) plunging into icy water, often in fancy dress, and the recent festive period was no exception, freezing temperatures.

The Outdoor Swimming Society classifies temperatures below 6℃ as "Baltic" and from 6-11℃ as "freezing". They advise people (get) in the water gradually, so as not to shock the body. Likewise, they recommend warming up gradually, and not (rush) the process by leaping into a hot bath when you get out. Instead, they suggest layering up and drinking something warm.

It wasn't just the water that was cold—many people experienced a white Christmas; snow fell in several counties including Yorkshire and Suffolk. Nila sat alone on the bus. Her older sister, Lexi, was one seat ahead, acting as if this was the best day ever. But for Nila, it was the worst. It was the last day of swimming lessons. Test Day.

"If I pass my test, I can sign up for Junior Lifeguarding over the summer," Nila heard Lexi telling her friend Jess. "You're the best swimmer in the class," Jess said. "There's just no way you wouldn't pass." Maybe she could talk to Lexi about the test, who passed Level 4 several summers ago.

"I thought sisters were supposed to help each other actively," Nila whispered to the window. An hour later, she held the edge of the pool, shaking. "For the last part of the test, you'll all be swimming the width of the pool," the instructor, Nate, told the class. "Can we swim in the shallow end?" Nila asked. "Nope," Nate said cheerfully. "To pass Level 4, it has to be the deep end."

Nila was nervous. She didn't know if she could swim all the way across without touching the bottom. "I'll be watching from the other side," Nate said. "Ready?" No! Nila thought. But Nate put the whistle to his lips and blew. Nila took a deep breath and pushed off. Lexi moved up and down, feeling light. She completed smoothly and passed Level 7! A kid from her class bumped into her, but she just smiled at him. She liked everyone right now. Nila, too—even though she'd been such a pest earlier. Where was she, anyway?

After a minute, Lexi spotted her sister crossing the pool. Nila was way behind the others. As Nila neared the middle of the pool, she stopped. "Keep going," Lexi called. "You can do it!" When Nila found out her position, her heart sank. Only halfway across! Some kids in her class were already at the wall, playing and talking. Nate was bending over to talk to one of the kids. He didn't see her. Better keep going, she thought. But she was tired, Lexi kept her eyes on her sister's slow progress.

注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

Paragraph 1:

As Lexi watched, Nila's head dipped briefly underwater before it resurfaced (再次浮出水面).

Paragraph 2:

Just then, Nila felt someone's arms grabbing her from behind.
