Country Walks

  Hope village

A leisurely (悠闲的) way to spend an hour or two is by visiting the busy village of Hope with its lovely country gardens. A gentle walk towards the hills will soon bring you to excellent views.

  Country Park

The Lime House here attracts thousands of visitors, but this is a pleasant walk away from the crowds, through parkland, woods and up onto the hills. Popular with bird-watchers. Allow three hours. The house was built in

1570.

  Cornford

This is an easy walk through a little-known valley. See the 200-year-old buildings from the cloth-making industry which now stand empty.

  Devonshire Park

Allow at least half a day, or make it a full day by visiting the adventure playground and farmyard. Stop at the cafe (open all day) or enjoy the fantastic gardens. Guided walks are available (可获得的) for small groups.

  Howden lake

This two-hour walk attracts thousands of visitors. Children can go sailing on the lake with trainers.

  Stanton

This walk is certainly for very fit walkers only—the paths get very slippery (滑的) after rain. Allow six hours and start early! You're unlikely to meet another person all day. Be sure to pack food—you'll be up on the hilltops all day.

  Strines

You need to be used to walking to successfully complete this seven-hour walk through the wildest scenery in the area. Follow a little-known footpath to the highest point for miles.

  Langsett

This is an exciting walk along easy paths, which are crowded at weekend. And it's a popular place for family picnics. Guided walks start from the near village (10 a.m. Sundays) and visit 800-year-old woodland.

When I was in the fifth grade, my teachers first discovered that I could not even read the first grade books. They didn't think this kind of problem could happen to me since my father was a famous scientist. My parents sent me to experts, trying to find out what the problem was. My IQ was high, but I had severe problems in learning. They discovered that I was dyslexic (诵读困难的). I was lucky that my parents cared enough to find a way out for me.

When my parents went to Ford Country Day School and sat down with Brent, a teacher in the school, he agreed to help without thinking twice. My family was not rich and I was allowed to go to school free of charge because my mother drove some students to school in the morning in her car. I do know, however, without Brent reaching out to my family, my life would have taken a turn for the worst. Brent and my parents decided to have me retake the fifth grade in the next school year.

I was afraid of going to school with my difficulties in learning, but Brent's kind and loving support helped me slowly learn to grow andovercomemy learning disability. Ford Country Day School has become the most important turning point in my life. The foundation that Brent gave me has in many ways set my direction in life.

I went to Japan to live with my brother for one year right out of Ford Country Day School. I was in an international school in Tokyo. If I had not had the experience in Ford Country Day School, I would not have been able to survive in Japan. I count myself as one of the truly lucky people having been touched by Brent's caring and love.

"The price of books for our students is just getting higher and higher, combined with the rising cost of tuition, and it's killing these students," said Peter Jason, a college professor. "Remember, students are one of the poorest groups of people in America. Almost half of them have at least one part-time job. In fact, one of my students has three jobs. And she still manages to have high scores and go to school full-time."

Textbook prices are traditionally high. What's more, many college teachers change textbooks year after year; they either upgrade to a new edition or switch to an entirely different textbook. This further hurts students because if an instructor no longer uses a particular textbook, that book has no resale value.

Dr. Jason decided to make reading a little easier and a lot cheaper for his students by writing his own book on public speaking. "Many books have an increased price due to CD-ROMs, lots of color photographs and pictures. I talked to my students, and many of them, like me, prefer to keep things simple! So, a few years ago, I wrote my own textbook. Compared to most other public speaking books, mine is half the number of pages, and one-third the price. That is, $30 instead of $ 90. When I wrote a second edition last year, students only had to buy the 35 new pages. For only $7, they had almost a new book. Now my loose-leaf textbook enjoys great popularity among the students. Maybe in the future more writers and publishers will try it."

For hundreds of years, America's wilderness has been reduced due to growing cities, leaving outdoors lovers like hunters with fewer chances. By around 1900, too much hunting drove America's deer nearly into extinction (灭绝), less than a half-million deer, from 45 million in 1450.

Law-makers began to make rules to protect deer and keep ecological balance (生态平衡). And it did make a big difference. By 2000, the deer population had come up to 38 million. Those days, millions of deer lived side by side with humans and could freely find enough food resources.

Gradually, the number of deer was increasing too rapidly, which was not good for both the animals and people. City hunting plays an important role in keeping ecological balance, particularly in places where the animals sometimes cause major problems.

"City deer hunting is a management practice used in many cities and suburban areas across the United States," says Jason Andrews, program manager of the Urban Deer Hunt in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. In the early 2000s, a high number of car accidents were caused by deer. And there was also significant vegetation degradation (植被退化) in many cities. Many possible solutions were researched by the city government. Some suggested hunting deer and other wild animals, but others were against that practice.

In the end, researchers determined that the most effective and sustainable (可持续的) population management solution would be hunting with bows. "City deer hunting is popular in cities that have too many wild deer as well as wooded areas," says Andrews. "In Cedar Rapids, all parts of the city have right habitats to keep deer population, thus hunting is allowed. I must note that hunting is only allowed on private lands. No parks or any other public grounds can be hunted."

Last Sunday, Emily and her brother, John, went to a restaurant to have dinner. There were lots of people in the restaurant so they had to share their table with another person, who was a young lady in her twenties. After eating, she left in a hurry and left her phone on the table.

When Emily and John prepared to go home, Emily noticed the phone. She quickly told John. "It must be the young lady's phone." John looked at the phone which took his breath away. It was one of the latest models on the market. John had always wanted a phone, but his parents didn't agree.

John stared at it for some minutes. Then he said slowly, "I want to take the phone." Emily could not believe her ears. She shouted at her brother. "You can't! What if the owner comes to look for it?" However, John grabbed the phone and ran out of the restaurant quickly.

Upon arriving home, John locked his bedroom door with trembling hands. Inside his room, he took out the piece of beauty. He liked it very much and polished it happily.

Before sleep, Emily went into John's bedroom and said. "John, you can't keep the phone. Your behavior is wrong. And how will you explain the thing to our parents?" John said. "I will say a friend lent it to me." "You are lying. Oh, dear! When did you turn so dishonest?" said Emily.

Then Emily saw a house phone number on the plastic cover of the phone. "Why don't we just call this number? The owner must be worried. We can talk to her and ask her to come and take back her phone." Emily was trying to persuade her brother to change his mind.
