Tearless Onions Go on Sale

UK supermarket Waitrose has started selling a new type of "tearless" onions called Sunions. Many people find that chopping onions makes them cry. This is because onions give off chemicals that make your eyes water. Plant breeder Rick Waston crossed several types of onions to create a version that was the least pungent (刺激性的). There's just onecatch—they are three times more expensive than Waitrose's cheapest own-brand onions.

"See" with a Bionic (仿生) Eye

An 88-year-old woman who was blind in her left eye can now see with it again—thanks to a microchip placed under her retina. The retina is a light-sensitive (感光的) area at the back of the eye. The chip picks up video signals from a camera fitted on a special pair of glasses. The signals are then sent to the brain, which understands them as if they were produced by natural vision. The patient, who has received the implant (移植), said, "I'm excited at the possibility of enjoying my hobbies again. "

The time may be coming to wash our hands with plastic trash. A Virginia Tech team has found a way to turn old plastic into surfactants (表面活性剂) which are the main ingredients for soap. Surfactants can stick together materials that usually would not mix-such as oil and water. "To me, plastic waste basically is aboveground crude oil (原油), " says Guoliang Liu, a chemist at Virginia Tech. The team hopes to partner with industry to make plastic waste a bit cleaner.

Energetic music fills the air as students move their arms and dance along to do aerobic exercises (有氧体操). This semester, students at the Aerospace City School of RDFZ in Beijing have more fun activities.

"Students have different physical conditions after recovering from the Disease, " Wang Lifang, a PE teacher at the school, told a local TV station. "So we start from easier activities such as dancing, fun games and sit-ups to gradually improve students' physical health. "

The PE teachers designed a series of aerobic exercises, which can train students' core (核心), upper body and leg strength. To make sure everyone is safe, the school also uses wearable devices to keep track of students' heart rates during exercises.

"The music is happy and relaxing, and we all enjoy this kind of fun PE class, "said eighth-grader Tu Yahan.

At Taipingchuan No. 1 Middle School in Jilin, students began to do Tai Chi instead of running during the morning break. "I like doing Tai Chi because it won't make you out of breath. I think it's good for students who are still coughing these days, "said Liu Jiawei from the school.

But this doesn't mean that students will not do other regular sports anymore. According to Wang, the PE teachers will keep changing training plans based on students' conditions and gradually go back to normal teaching content. "During this special period of time, it's even more important to let students realize the value of sports and develop healthy exercise habits, " said Wang.

One of my favorite inventions in recent years is face unlocking. Without needing to lift my fingers and type in the numbers, I can get straight into my phone with just a look. Now there is a new technology designed to replace the password called the "passkey"!

Passkeys turn your phone into something a bit like a wallet, which you can use to store membership cards to all of your apps and services. When you need to log in to a website, you'll just have to tap a button on your phone and your passkey wallet will let you in without any worry.

And how does it keep this wallet safe? By using the same biometric (生物统计) "check your phone uses—a face scan or a fingerprint that cannot easily be forged.

Passkeys won't just save us from having to remember passwords but, perhaps logging in with a passkey will actually be much safer than typing a password. This is because it uses a technology called "public key" cryptography (密码) which is one of the building blocks of the Internet-and is how computers have securely communicated with other computers for so many years. To put it simply, it works a bit like a key, instead of a password.

With a password, the website has to keep a database (数据库) of everyone's passwords to check against when you log in. But with a passkey, when you create your account on a website, it will effectively create a new lock and key. The website will keep the lock,     ★     .

I think it's a really clever idea, and that passkeys are going to make our digital lives even safer. So, next time you're complaining that you can't remember your password, don't worry too much. It won't always be like this!
