An old farmer lived with his grandson. Each morning, the 1 got up early and read his book.

Today we asked some students about what they think of their deskmates. Here are some of the results. 

You may know the English letters A, B and C. But do you know there are people called ABCs? Do you know there is such a thing as" a banana person"? How strange! ABC means American-born Chinese. An ABC is a Chinese, but was born in the United States. Sometimes, people call an ABC a "banana person". A banana is yellow outside. So, when a person is a "banana", he or she is white inside—thinking like a Westerner and yellow outside—looking like a Chinese. 

Usually, ABCs know little about China or the Chinese language. Some of them don't speak Chinese. But if ABCs cannot speak Chinese, can we still call them Chinese people? Yes, of course. They are overseas(海外的) Chinese. These people may be citizens(公民) of another country like the US, Canada or Singapore. But they have Chinese blood. Their parents, grandparents or even great-grandparents were from China. They all have black eyes and black hair. 

But they are not Chinese citizens. They are people of the People's Republic of China. For example, we all know the famous scientist C. N. Yang(杨振宁). He got the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1957. Chinese people love him. But he is an American citizen. 

If you go to a fast food restaurant, you will probably see a lot of teenagers (青少年). Today, many teenagers are becoming fat, and this is because of their bad eating habits. Most teenagers love food with a lot of fat, oil, salt and sugar. People often call this kind of food "junk food". 

But bad eating habits go beyond fast food. We find many teenagers don't have a good eating habit. Some don't have breakfast before they go to school. During the day, some don't have a healthy meal for lunch. In a recent survey (调查) at one school, scientists found that over two thirds of the students didn't like a healthy diet (饮食). They didn't like vegetables and many of them didn't like fruits. They liked to eat food with a lot of salt, sugar, or fat better. 

Parents today also worry about their children's diet. Some doctors give the following advice:

Teenagers shouldn't eat too much junk food. 

Teenagers shouldn't eat food with too much salt. Salt can cause high blood pressure (高血压) in the future. 

Teenagers should eat food with less fat, oil, and sugar. 

Teenagers need to eat some fruit and vegetables every day. Fruit and vegetables are rich in vitamins (维生素) and have little fat. 

Teenagers need to drink more milk. Milk will help their bones (骨骼) grow. 

Teenagers need to eat breakfast every day. This is good for their bodies and mind. 

Many years ago, there was something wrong with my left eye. At last, the doctor told me that I could never see from that eye again.  At that time, I often got angry and didn't want to do anything. No one wanted to help me. One night, I was waiting for a train, a man came and sat down next to me.  Then he said,"It seems that you need a friend to talk to. "We sat there for hours just talking like old friends.  Then his train came. He stood up and gave me a wonderful hug (拥抱). I will never forget it. Then he got on the train and gave me another of his big smiles and said, "Remember, a smile is the most beautiful part of a person(人). "

I never saw him again.  A smile can open doors. You can smile at anyone in the street. It is OK if you don't know him.

It was Friday afternoon. Mrs. White came to the kitchen and saw her daughter
