It was a lovely spring day. We could see dandelions(蒲公英)coming out 4  the grass in bunches. I watched my mother bend down by one of the bunches. "I think I'll remove all these weds(野草)," she said. "From now on, we'll 5  have roses in this garden."

"But I like dandelions," I said. "All flowers are 6  even dandelions!"

My mother looked at me seriously. "Yes. Every flower gives pleasure in its own way, doesn't it?" she asked thoughtfully. I nodded(点头)."And the same as 7 ," she said.

Just as rice and noodles are different from bread, snacks in China are a world apart from those in the UK and the US. For one thing, I never imagined that sunflower seeds ( 瓜 子 ) would be so1 in China. I saw people eating them while2 tables outside restaurants, before dinner and, of course, while watching TV. I also saw that a plate of sunflower seeds is always on 3 during the Spring Festival holiday.

In the UK, young people love their4 . In fact, young people in Britain eat more snacks than people of the same5 in other European countries. A survey has 6 that 64 percent of people under the age of 20 snack between meals, according to an article by the British Council.

British snacks are generally7 , but it's just too hard to say no to them. Our favorites are probably potato chips, which we call crisps, and chocolate bars. From a very young age, we always 8 our crisps and chocolate bars after school.

Snacks are also popular in the US. One of the things that I found the most extraordinary ( 特 别 的 )9 I first visited the US was the number of snacks in their supermarkets; I was surprised to find huge aisles (过道) just for snacks that were10 than some stores I'd been to in the UK. Snack tastes in the US are much the same as those in the UK, except that there's many more choices.

Reading can open a world of joy for students, and one North Carolina principal wants to spread that moment of bap pines s to them on their birthday.

Glenn Cook, principal of Pleasant Ridge Elementary School in Gastonia, North Carolina, came up with an idea to give each student a book on their birthday. With about 900 students attending Pleasant Ridge, it is not an easy task, but Cook says he's ready to "go big or go home". He is going to include every student in this project.

''I didn't have a lot of kids' books," said Cook."So I put the idea online, and I wanted to see if any of my trends needed to clean off their books b elves at home. I was hoping to get maybe 50 books for the first round of birthdays. "· The number of books Cook received was surprising." Were probably getting maybe 500 books," said Cook. There are so many books taking up spa cc all over his office.

The idea started when Cook attended a professional development event. He asked another principal for advice. This principal told him that at her school, she gave her students a pencil on their birthday.

He wanted to take this idea to the next level, so he began reading himself. He came up with the idea that a principal should share his excitement and love for reading. The goal of giving these books to students is to find a book that's right for each one, so they can experience the happiness of reading.

Local businesses have joined the project to donate books. Michelle Clear, a parent at Pleasant Ridge, decided to support Cook's project and offer her store as a book donation center."Reading just opens up so many ways in kids' lives," Clear noted. Hopefully, this will get across the nation to call on more people to donate books.

①The First Lesson of the New Term met people on CCTV 1 at 8 PM. on September 1. This show wants to tell us "Hard work leads to dreams." Looking back, this show is already 15 years old. The First Lesson of the New Term is popular with all the primary and middle school students because it shows something educational and meaningful through some real stories.

②There are some pictures showing some great events happening in our country. We all feel proud after watching them. We can't help thinking: the development of the motherland can't be achieved without everyone's efforts. Therefore, as students, we should keep working hard and grow healthily, so as to get ready for the future development of our country.

③When we watch The First Lesson of the New Term in 2022 and touch the story in the show, we will find that our world is really beautiful. Having the chance to become a person in this time is a very happy thing.

④In addition, the program is full ofpositiveenergy. It tells us the importance of having right ideas and dreams. So we should set up the right idea to bright our nice future. Therefore, this is the reason why "the first class" is so popular. We can also get the knowledge out of class, feeling the truth.

⑤As a teenager in the new time, we should think about the purpose of the story characters, regard them as our examples, learn their spirits, and in the future to be more serious about studying, and even to becoming a useful person!

Is there intelligent (有智力的) life on other planets? For years, scientists said "no" or "we don't know". But today this is changing. Seth Shostak and Alexandra Barnett are astronomers (天文学家). They believe intelligent life exists (存在) somewhere in the universe. They also think we will soon contact these beings (人;生物).

Why do Shostak and Barnett think intelligent life exists on other planets? The first reason is time. Scientists believe the universe is about 12 billion years old. "This is long enough for other planets to have intelligent life," say Shostak and Barnett. The second reason is size—the universe is huge. "Tools like the Hubble Telescope (哈勃望远镜) have shown that there are at least 100 billion galaxies," says Shostak. "And our galaxy, the Milky Way, has at least 100 billion stars. Some planets going around these stars might be similar to Earth."

In the past, it was hard to look for signs of intelligent life in the universe. But now, powerful telescopes (高倍望远镜) allow scientists to discover smaller planets. These planets might have intelligent life.

Have beings from space already visited Earth? "Probably not," says Shostak. However, intelligent beings may contact us in other way, such as radio signals (信号). In fact, they may be trying to communicate with us now, but we don't have the right tools to receive their messages. However, this is changing. By 2025, we could make contact with other life forms in our universe and we might help each other.

Paper cutting has been around for over 1,500 years.Paper cutting sounds very easy but it can be difficult to do.The paper,usually red,is folded before it is cut with scissors.The most common pictures are flowers,animals,and things about Chinese history.During the Spring Festival,they are put on windows,doors and walls as symbols of wishes for good luck and a happy new year.

You and your parents can stop worrying—Edison, Darwin and many others were just c     boys when they were very young. Some of them in the eyes of their teachers were slow pupils. So i you have the same, don't feel disappointed (失望的).

Parents enjoy giving more inspiring (激励的) examples to e their children. If you take piano lessons, your parents might show you the picture of Mozart, playing the piano at midnight. But the fact is that at first he didn't a  to have much talent for music. It was not until 22 that Mozart suddenly became famous as a gifted m.

In the science field, there have been thousands of people who showed great iin certain subjects from their earliest years, and hundreds who didn't know what they would do in the future. You have the Wright brothers who wanted to be engineers when they were young. You have the Nobel Prize w  the Physicist Enrico Fermi, had learnt enough Maths for a doctor's degree when he was u twenty. But there is also Charles Darwin, who hated to go to school when he was young. His father once shouted "You will put your parents to shame."

So who knows what might happen in the f ? It is, of course, better for the young people to know what they want to do in life. But they needn't lose heart if they don't. Remember there is s plenty of time and it's never too late for success.
