Toronto' s CN Tower

The Fairmont Royal York Hotel

It is one of Toronto' s oldest and most storied hotels. Since opening in 1929, it' s stood as one of the largest hotels in the British Commonwealth with 1, 600 rooms. It' s also home to more than 300, 000 bees, who live on the hotel' s rooftop and produce honey for the Fairmont Royal York' s dining facilities (设施).

North America' s largest urban car-free community offers plenty of green space and beaches for visitors of all ages. Those looking for exercise can explore the islands by bike while checking out the breathtaking views of Toronto' s skyline; visit the rental facility near the Centre Island ferry dock.

Voted the world' s best food market in 2012, the St. Lawrence Market complex consists of two buildings. The north building plays host to weekly Saturday farmer' s markets, while in the south building, open every day except Sunday and Monday, meat, baked goods, jewelry. . . are on offer. One of Toronto' s most iconic (标志性的) breakfasts — the pea-meal bacon sandwich is considered a signature dish. 

The first time I realized that I had a love for sports competitions was during the Field Day inelementary school. Small for my age, and more of a bookworm than a sports lover, I had suffered that special humiliation of being picked last for various gym teams. The Field Day, which focused on individual (个体的) skills, was different. In the Softball Throw event, I got my first taste of sporting victory. Credit goes to the example of my first coach, my father. He lifted weights every morning at home. He bought us all baseball gloves and hats, and in the warm months, we spent hours playing catch. 

Once I got to sixth grade and switched to private school, our entire student body was assigned to either the Red or the White team. Throughout the year, we competed against each other in various games and exercises for points. I eventually became president of The Committee of Games. I also played on the field hockey team and the basketball team. And at home, playing tennis, skating, skiing and biking were simply normal things we did. During the break time, magazines were also quite popular for us teens. These regularly featured articles on physical exercise. Somehow, my college roommate and I took up the habit of completing Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) exercises every day, a practice that continued into my marriage, when we had no spare money to use to join a gym. 

So, though it shocks some of our friends, that early foundation (基础) evolved in adulthood into a sports and fitness focus, considered important even on vacation. I still love reading and the arts, too. As far as I' m concerned, life is the richest with my feet in both worlds. 

A woman' s husband divorced her because she spent too much time on the Internet. But she continued to surf the World Wide Web. She did this so often that she forgot to take her children to the doctor or get the kids enough food. Her husband asked the court for the children. 

But he needed someone to support her illness. " I had to write a letter to the judge," said Dr. Jonathan Kandell. " The judge did not believe there was such a thing as Internet addiction. " 

Is there? Some psychologists say that Internet addiction is real, just like gambling or drug abuse. 

At the University of Maryland, a doctor started an Internet addiction support group after he watched a few addicted students nearly failed school. 

How can you tell if you have an abnormal pattern of Internet use? Do you need to spend increased amounts of time on the Internet to achieve satisfaction? And when you' re not online, do you have fantasies or dreams about the Internet? 

Tyler Johnson, 17, a high school senior in Abbotsford, British Columbia, spends more than six hours a day online and more than an hour reading his email. 

Tyler dropped out of school sports, and now, every day after school until 3 or 4 o' clock in the morning, he plays games on the Internet. 

Dr. Kandell guesses that many addicts don' t get help because they don' t know they have a problem. " I think we' re about a year away from having people recognize it' s really a problem," he said. " It' s out there. There' s no question. " 

An earthquake is literally an earth-shattering experience! There you are enjoying an afternoon nap, having a cup of coffee in the morning, or even sleeping on a cold winter night when —WHAM! —the entire crockery (陶器) shelf collapses, and all the plates and cups break into pieces. A painting on the wall nearly knocks you down as it falls. 

What should one do in an earthquake? The prime-time (黄金时间的) news gives no warning, nor is there a time of year, like the monsoon (风) season, when an earthquake always occurs. Unlike a tornado or hurricane, there is no known way of predicting an earthquake. 

Though about 500, 000 earthquakes occur each year, only 100 of them cause damage! However, an earthquake can strike any time of the day or night, so it needs to be prepared for when you have the misfortune of being caught in the middle of one. 

If you' re indoors, stay indoors, unless you' re on the ground floor, where you can easily run outside. The best thing to do if you' re indoors is to hide under a strong piece of furniture like a bed or desk. Do not head for the stairway if you' re living on an upper storey, because stairways can collapse. 

If you' re driving, get out of traffic and stop on a wide and open road. Do not stop on a bridge, or in another case, under one. Stay inside your car until the shaking stops. Before you restart driving, look out for fissures (裂缝), breaks in the road, and bumps or cracks. Inside your home, be careful not to turn on the gas until you' re sure the cylinder (气罐) is safe, and there is no leak. 

Avoid using your telephone unless there' s an emergency. You could be occupying lines that are needed by other people. Lastly, if you' re not trapped or seriously hurt, do not expect fire fighters, army or police to help you. They may be busy rescuing people in greater need than you!

How can English be learned well? In my view, keeping up with teachers is a good way. Teachers are experienced and their plans are effective. But remember to work in a way that suits you.  Keep a notebook to make a record of the mistakes you make —it' ll help you avoid making the same ones later. 

The school life may be hard, but you' re not alone. You may be busy studying, but you can show your care by calling your friends or sending short messages.  

It' s as important to live well as it is to study well. Going to bed no later than 11: 30 pm is important.  You needn' t follow a special diet, but make sure you are eating healthy meals each day. 

  Having a lot of schoolwork doesn' t mean having to quit other activities. Playing basketball or having a talk with your classmates can relax yourself. Time out is not a waste of time but helps you study more efficiently. 

Besides taking the College Entrance Examination, you have other choices for college.  Pay attention to the useful information you can find, whether it' s from school, the news media or other sources.

Two weeks ago, a 5-year-old girl named Sunshine Oelfke emptied out her piggy bank (存钱罐) onto the living room floor and immediately started counting. Her grandmother, Jackie Oelfke, thought she was playing as she carefully lined up the coins, but then she saw the girl put the coins into a plastic bag and place it in her backpack. 

" That aroused my curiosity," Jackie told CBS News. " Nobody messes with the piggy bank. " After observing Sunshine at work a few minutes longer, Jackie decided to find out why the little girl broke into her savings. 

" What are you doing with that money? " Jackie asked her granddaughter. 

" I' m taking it to school," Sunshine replied. The little girl finally stated the real reason why she needed the money. " I' m going to take it for milk money. My friend Layla doesn' t get milk—her mom doesn' t have milk money but I do. "
