Seeds on Ice

Close to the North Pole, remote and rocky Plateau Mountain in the Norwegian archipelago of Svalbard seems an unlikely spot for any global effort to safeguard agriculture. In this cold and deserted environment,no grains,no gardens,no trees can grow. Yet at the end of a 130-meter-long tunnel cut out of solid stone is a room filled with humanity's most precious treasure, the largest and most diverse(多样的) seed collection—more than a half-billion seeds.

A quiet rescue mission is under way. With growing evidence that unchecked climate change-will seriously affect food production and threaten the diversity of crops around the world, the Svalbard Global Seed Vault (地窖) represents a major step towards ensuring the preservation (贮藏) of hundreds of thousands of crop varieties. This is a seed collection, but more importantly, it is a collection of the traits found within the seeds:the genes that give one variety resistance to a particular pest and another variety tolerance for hot,dry weather.

Few people will ever see or come into contact with the contents of this vault. In sealed boxes, behind multiple locked doors, monitored by electronic security systems, enveloped in below—zero temperatures, and surrounded by tons of rock, hundreds of millions of seeds are protected in their mountain fortress. Frozen in such conditions inside the mountain, seeds of most major crops will remainviablefor hundreds of years, or longer. Seeds of some are capable of retaining (保留) their ability to grow for thousands of years.

Everyone can look back now and say that the Seed Vault was a good and obvious idea, and that of course the Norwegian government should have approved and funded it. But back in 2004, when the Seed Vault was proposed, it was viewed as a crazy, impractical, and expensive idea.

We knew that nothing would provide a definite guarantee(保证). But we were tired, fed up, and frankly scared of the steady, greater losses of crop diversity. The Seed Vault was built by optimists who wanted to do something to preserve options so that humanity and its crops might be better prepared for change. If it simply resupplied seed gene banks with samples those gene banks had lost, this would repay our efforts.

The Seed Vault is about hope and commitment(责任)—about what can be done if countries come together and work cooperatively to accomplish something significant, long-lasting,and worthy of who we are and wish to be.

Whether you love happy endings or a dark reality in TV dramas, you could soon be able to decide what you get. Netflix, the TV-streaming company behind hit shows such as The Crown and House Of Cards,is working on ways to give viewers control of key plot decisions.

Some of the storylines will be simple and linear, like the Choose Your Own Adventure books that many grew up with. For example, viewers might decide whether a prisoner in the drama Orange Is The New Black joins a gang (黑帮) or not.

The technology could also potentially be used to allow Princess Margaret to marry Peter Townsend in The Crown, instead of having her relationship with the divorcee (离婚者) blocked by the Establishment.Other storylines will be much more complex, allowing viewers to connect plot points in a variety of ways using their TV remotes.

A source said,"We're doing work on branch narratives (叙事) so you are actually making choices as you watch. All the content will be there, and then people will have to get through it in different ways. We'll see how it plays out. It's an experiment. We'll see if it gets much success. For creators,it's a new field."

Actors would film numerous alternate plot segments (片段) in advance, letting viewers choose which route to take through the story.Netflix will run a trial with choose-your-own-adventure shows for children later this year, based on an established character. If they are successful,it will use the format for TV programmes aimed at adults. Netflix president Reed Hastings confirmed that the company is working on interactive shows, saying,"Once you have got interactivity, you can try anything."

At least five million UK households are thought to be signed up to Netflix, and it is challenging traditional broadcasters.Earlier this year,BBC boss Lord Hall promised to reinvent the iPlayer so that it overtakes Netflix as a destination in its own right, rather than a catch-up service.

    Evolution via Roadkill

Congress Completes Work on 2013 Spending Bill

This week, the U.S. Congress passed a bill to fund the government until the end of the fiscal(财政的) year, and research agencies now know how much to spend in 2013. The so-called continuing resolution retains the sequester and its $85 billion cut in discretionary spending. The bill throws NASA's planetary programs a lifeline and gives the National Science Foundation a bit of a boost, but the National Institutes of Health's funding stays flat at 2012 levels—bad news for biomedical research.

    Making Moonshine Safe to Drink

Home-brew drinkers in developing countries often risk blindness or even death from methanol poisoning when they drink. Now, scientists have made a reusable wireless chip that can analyze a drink's methanol content and warn users of any danger. In 2 years, they hope to develop a product that can send results directly to a cell phone.
