Jack Frost has paid another visit to the Midwest. For the second time this week, a major winter storm has left people from Oklahoma to the Great Lakes struggling to stay safe and warm. Heavy, wet snow has shut down major highways, put off flights and left hundreds of thousands of Midwesterner without power. "It's just snow. That's all we can see," said Shannon Wick ware of Woodward.

The storm began in Texas on Sunday and rapidly traveled north. A gust of wind pushed the storm up towards Oklahoma, bringing fifteen inches of snow to parts of Oklahoma. It then moved east and hovered over Chicago, dropping four inches of wet snow on top of the city and its suburbs. Airlines canceled nearly 500 flights at Chicago's O' Hare and Midway airports. Later, the storm swept Ohio, causing a lot of problems for the local people. Taking into account the safety of their students in the storm, many schools in the affected areas either put off opening or did not open at all.

In Kansas City, Missouri, up to ten inches of snow had fallen before midday on Tuesday. The city's mayor, Sty James, declared a state of emergency. Most government and office buildings were shut down. Some hospitals were forced to close urgent-care clinics.

While heavy snowfall is not usual for this part of the country at this time of year, it is the amount of moisture in the snow that makes conditions extra "treacherous". When snow is especially wet, it weighs down trees and brings down power lines. Roofs can cave in under the pressure and roads can become very icy. The power lines have cut off electricity to more than 100, 000 homes and businesses in the Midwest.

As snow falls and the temperature continues to drop, people are preparing the best they can to stay dry and safe. The bad weather is making travel difficult for even snowplows (扫雪机) and repair vehicles.

A sense of belonging to a group of co-workers is a better motivator for some employees than money, according to a study by University of lowa researchers. "We find that some self-managed teams show increased performance, when their members work together well," says Greg Stewart, the lead professor in the study.

At the beginning,Stewart's group studied how managers of self-managed teams decided payment. They studied 587 workers in 45 self-managed teams in Iowa. The members were allowed to give suggestions on how much their teammates should be paid for their work. The managers collected their ideas and then made decisions. The members were asked about how much their team spirit attracted them, and managers were asked about the productivity of both individuals and teams.

"In high functioning teams the group members work actively with each other, and they encourage and support each other, " says Stephen Courtright, member of the research group. The reason is that peer pressure acts as an important social force. Members don't want to disappoint their teammates,so team spirit is more effective even than money as a motivating tool. People have a social need to be accepted,to be regarded as a part of a group and want to perform well.

However, this works only when team members get along. When they don't, then self- managed teams perform badly. When team members don't care much for each other, Courtright says team spirit as a motivating factor won't work. So money becomes the main motivating factor to improve productivity.

The carrot and stick method is that managers offer team members things in order to persuade them to work and punish them if they refuse. "Teams perform better when there is pressure from peers to perform well than when managers wave a carrot and stick," Courtright says. "However, the carrot and stick method works well when team members just can't get along. "

Facial recognition technology was used to permit passengers to get on flights at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International airport last week, making it the first in the nation to use the system. The technology can be used by international passengers traveling through a special terminal, which is operated by Delta Airlines. Delta said it is the first fully biometric (生物特征识别) airport terminal to operate in the U.S.

The goal of the system is to simplify and speed up the process of presenting documents to get on a flight. Passengers can begin using the facial recognition system when they first arrive at the airport. After the first check-in, passengers can also use face recognition to pass through security and to get on the plane. The system prevents the need for travelers to present their passport up to four times during the usual check in process. Travelers look into a camera that scans their face. This image is then compared against a collection of pictures kept by the CBP (U. S. Customs and Border Protection). The agency collects face scans from passports and visas.

The system, however, has raised concerns about privacy. Jeramie Scott, a lawyer with the Electronic Privacy Information Center, has called the use of facial recognition at U. S. airports a "massive threat". He said that the government has created "a digital ID of millions of Americans" through facial recognition, and the government's facial recognition database of citizens could he used for other purposes without an individual's permission. "The government now has the power to identify you whenever it wants. And they did this without a public discussion or consent taking photos collected for one purpose and using it for another," he said.

The CBP told CBS News that any U. S. citizen who has privacy concerns can choose not to take part in the facial recognition system. This would prevent the airline from collecting a face scan to compare with SBP records. Its policy is to remove photos of U. S. citizens from its system once their identifies have been confirmed.

Delta Gay about two percent of passengers using the Atlanta airport terminal have chosen not to use the facial recognition system. Next year, the airline plans to expand its biometric system for international travelers at Detroit Metropolitan Airport in Michigan.

It had been only two weeks, but teaching at Ming Jheng turned out to be the most rewarding experience of my life. I not only 1 a deeper understanding about teaching, 2 experienced unimaginable cultural differences. I made some lifelong friends, and learned to be a more 3 individual.

Things were not all 4 at the beginning. Never having taught before, I still recall how 5 I was at the night before my first day of class. How would I keep the students 6 for six periods a day? How would they react to my teaching plans and activities? There were many other conditions and fears I had to 7. Having been forced into such a situation, I was taught by my fellow teachers a lot about being a more generous, considerate person.

Teaching at Ming Jheng turned out to be quite 8 from what I had expected. I was 9 by how respectful most of the students were. Some girls would 10 to me and offer me messages while 11 would share their precious candies with me. During the breaks, a group of second graders would gather around me and ask for hugs. Gradually, the third and fourth graders would 12 me by the hand and make me play with them in the playground. How nicely these kids treated me and appreciated me! All my 13 and exhaustion paid off in the end. Everything was worth it.

Now, as I 14 the past month, I can smile and say, that I've truly grown, mentally and socially. Thanks to the Overseas Compatriot Youth Volunteer Teaching English Program, it has taught me so many things I would 15 have learned in school.

Forty-three years seems like a long time to remember the name of a mere friend. I have already forgotten the name of an old lady who was a customer on my paper route when I was a twelve-year-old boy in Marinette, Wisconsin back in 1954. Yet it seems like just yesterday that she taught me a lesson in forgiveness that I can only hope to pass on to someone else someday. On a Saturday afternoon, a friend and I were throwing rocks onto the roof of the old lady's house from a secret spot in her backyard. The object of our play was to observe how the rocks changed to missiles as they rolled to the roof's edge and shot out into the yard like comets (彗星) falling from the sky.

I found myself a perfectly smooth rock and sent it for a ride. The stone was too smooth, however, so it slipped from my hand as I let it go and headed straight for a small window on the old lady's back porch. At the sound of broken glass, we took off from the old lady's yard faster than any of our missiles flew off her roof.

I was so scared about getting caught that I was concerned about the old lady with the broken porch window all the time that night. However, a few days later, when I was sure that I hadn't been discovered, I started to feel guilty for her bad luck. She still greeted me with a smile each day when I gave her the paper, but I was no longer able to look into her eyes.

I made up my mind that I would save my paper delivery money, and in three weeks I had the seven dollars that I thought would cover the cost of her window. I put the money in an envelope with a note explaining that I was sorry for breaking her window and hoped that the seven dollars would cover the cost for repairing it.

Paragraph 1:

I waited until it was dark.

Paragraph 2:

The next day, I handed the old lady her paper.
