Toni Morrison was an American write who received the Nobel Prize in Literature. Her novels Beloved, SongofSolomon and others explored the way African-Americans search for freedom and identity in a country obsessed (受困扰的) with skin color. Morrison was nearly 40 when she published her first novel TheBluestEye in 1970. The Nobel Prize committee described her writing as language itself, a language she wants to liberate from race. Her novels discussed America's past, focusing on black history and the effects of slavery and racism. She called her characters "the unfree at the heart of the democratic (民主的) experiment".

In 1988, she won the Pulitzer Prize for her novel Beloved, the story of a mother who kills her baby daughter rather than permit her to be born into slavery. It became a best-seller and was later made into a film with Oprah Winfrey. Many Americans admired her as the country's greatest living writer, including former President Barack Obama.

She was born in 1931. She attended Howard University, an all-black university in Washington, D. C. At Howard, she read African, British and American literature, including writers William Faulkner and Virginia Woolf. After a short marriage, she became a single mother of two sons and worked as a book editor in New York.

Several publishers rejected her first book TheBluestEye but it impressed TheNewYorkTimes' book critic John Leonard, who believed Morrison was an important new voice. He said her writing was "so charged with pain and wonder that the novel becomes poetry".

Morrison enjoyed her literary fame and was proud of her Nobel Prize won in 1993.

What do TomSawyer and JumpingFrogs have in common?Stories about both of them were created by one man:Mark Twain. Twain was four years old when his family moved to Hannibal, Missouri, located on the west bank of the Mississippi. Twain grew up there and was fascinated with life along the river—the steamboats, the giant lumber rafts, and the people who worked on them.

TheCelebratedJumpingFrogofCalaverasCounty is one of Twain's best loved short stories, and TheAdventuresofTomSawyer is one of his most famous novels. Both these works are celebrated by events held during National Tom Sawyer Days, which originated in the late 1950s and became national in the 1960s. Children enter their frogs in the jumping contest during National Tom Sawyer Days. There's also a fence painting contest to see who can paint the fastest. The idea for this contest comes from a scene in TomSawyer, in which Tom has been told to paint the fence in front of the house he lives in. It's a beautiful day, and he would rather be doing anything else. As his friends walk by, he makes them believe that it's fun to paint, and they join in the "fun". By the end of the day, the fence has three coats of paint!

Although the story of Tom Sawyer is a fiction, it's based on facts. If you go to Hannibal, you'll see the white fence, which still stands at Twain's boyhood home.

I have a special place in my heart for libraries. I have for as long as I can remember. I was always an enthusiastic reader, sometimes reading up to three books a day as a child. Stories were like air to me and while other kids played ball or went to parties, I lived out adventures through the books I checked out from the library.

My first job was working at the Ukiah Library when I was 16 years old. It was a dream job and I did everything from shelving books to reading to the children for story time.

As I grew older and became a mother, the library took on a new place andan added meaningin my life. I had several children and books were our main source(来源) of entertainment. It was a big deal for us to load up and go to the local library, where my kids could pick out books to read or books they wanted me to read to them.

I always read, using different voices, as though I were acting out the stories with my voice and they loved it!It was a special time to bond with my children and it filled them with the wonderment of books.

Now, I see my children taking their children to the library and I love that the excitement of going to the library lives on from generation to generation.

As a novelist, I've found a new relationship with libraries. I encourage readers to go to their local library when they can't afford to purchase a book. I see libraries as a safe haven(避风港) for readers and writers, a bridge that helps put together a reader with a book. Libraries, in their own way, help fight book piracy(盗版行为) and I think all writers should support libraries in a significant way when they can. Encourage readers to use the library. Share library announcements on your social media. Frequent them and talk about them when you can.

A good book can be satisfying. If reading is a habit you'd like to get into, there are some ways to develop it.

●Realize that reading is enjoyable if you have a good book. If you have a difficult book and you are forcing yourself through it, it will seem like a task.

●Set time. You should have some time during every day when you'll read for at least 5 to 10 minutes. For example, make it a habit to read during breakfast and lunch and even dinner if you eat alone.

●Always carry a book. When I leave the house, I always make sure to have my car keys and one book at hand. The book stays with me in the car, and I take it into the office and to appointments and pretty much everywhere I go.

● Find a place in your home where you can sit in a comfortable chair. Don't lie down unless you're going to sleep. There shouldn't be a television or a computer near the chair, and no music or no noisy family members/roommates. If you don't have a place like this, create one.

●Reduce television/the Internet. If you really want to read more, try cutting back on time on TV or the Internet. Still, you could use the time you save for reading. This could create hours of book reading time.

E. Have some good tea or coffee while you read.
