As a garden designer and consultant, I see the amazing progress that can be made when gardeners get together and get things done. Here are some small stories about how something has been achieved through cooperation.

I was involved with one project earlier driven by two twelve-year-olds living in a small northern England town. To do something good for the environment, the two girls desired to grow their own food in some deserted land. So the pair spoke to their teacher about using a small abandoned space next to their school's parking lot. The teacher reached me for advice and together we determined who owned the space. The owner agreed to rent the space and the kids were able to raise money to pay the rent and start growing food on the site.

Another motivating story was about one enterprising gardener in Illinois who decided to speak with his neighbors about using their grass-filled front yards to grow food. This gardener did have his own garden but he wanted to do more. So he offered to tend his neighbors' front yards in return for the use of these underutilized(未充分利用的) spaces to grow food everyone would share. To his surprise, all of his neighbors adopted this front-yard farming idea, and even one neighbor joined him and helped grow the food to learn more about the process. Everyone gained a lot at last.

The final story was that of three women in a neighborhood in Vermont. Struggling to find the time to look after their kids and grow their own food, they found a solution. The mothers together raised children and plants, selling produce and young plants to other gardeners in the area to cover basic costs. They took turns on the daycare duty for a handful of children and tended the garden around their part-time jobs.

These stories show just what can be achieved when people work together to make their own lives and the lives of those around them just a little bit better.

Sylvester Stallone has one of the most motivating success stories. Before he made it big, he was essentially a starving artist. For many years after his college years, he worked odd jobs to pay the bill while simultaneously taking on any acting role he could find to keep his dream of becoming a successful actor alive.

Most people don't know this about Sylvester Stallone, but as a young man, he was determined to become a big movie star in Hollywood. He longed to become a great director, producer, and writer. Everyone told him it could not be done, but he wasn't one to take no for an answer. And after finding little luck in the New York's film scene, he decided to take his chances in Los Angeles.

It was a struggle that Sylvester would endure for many years, seven in fact. Throughout all of those seven challenging years, Sylvester would gain a few small roles in a handful of movies, but nothing grand enough to get his career launched. During those seven long years of striving, he came face-to-face with near poverty. Getting so desperate for money, he at one point had to sell his wife's jewelry. And he even had to sell his dog because he couldn't keep him fed. And to top it all, there came a point where Sylvester was homeless, and had to sleep outside for a number of days.

But his days of struggle as an aspiring actor would not last forever. After facing seemingly many hardships for over seven years, he would finally get his big break. And this break would come after he managed to get a script he wrote in a three-day flurry of inspiration in front of two big-shot directors in Hollywood. It was this defining moment that would turn the tide for Sylvester, and his career would skyrocket after he negotiated the lead role in the film that would come to be known as Rocky.

Since then, Sylvester, and his series of movies revolving around Rocky have been inspiring people all around the world. His success story is one that should be observed, retold, and shared, just as much as his movies are.

How to Succeed in Science

To succeed in science, you need a lot more than luck. In my view, you have to combine intelligence with willingness not to follow conventions when they block your path forwards. Thus, these have come to be my rules for success.

 •

That might sound proud, but the fact is that you must always turn to people who are brighter than yourself. It's like playing any game. Even as a child, I never wanted to play games with anyone who was as bad as I was. If you win, it gives you no pleasure. And in the game of science or life, the highest goal isn't simply to win; it's to win at something really difficult. .

 •Take risks

To make a huge success, a scientist has to be prepared to get into deep trouble. If you are going to make a huge jump in science, you will very likely be unqualified to succeed by definition. . This can be more than personally upsetting.

•Never do anything that bores you

My experience in science is that someone is always telling you to do things, and then leave you alone. I'm not good enough to do well in something I dislike. .

It's extremely hard to succeed if you don't want to be with other scientists—you have to go to key meetings where you find key facts that could have escaped you. And you have to chat with your competitors, even if you find them unpleasant. So my final rule is:.

A. Avoid foolish people

B. Meet challenges with great courage

C. In fact, I find it hard to do well in something I like

D. If you can't stand to be with your peers, get out of science

E. Be sure you always have someone to save you from a deep mess

F. Besides, you even have to be prepared to disbelieve your scientific heroes

G. Put another way, it's to go somewhere beyond your ability and come out on top
