The Best Way to Nap

A study published in the journal Heart found a link between healthy napping (打盹)and a lowered risk of heart disease. The American Psychological Association points out that naps can improve memory, learning capacity and mood. Sara Med nick, PhD, a neuroscience at the University of California explains that when you fall asleep, your body moves through stages that each play a role in health. Ideal napping times are based around this four-stage cycle.

Stage 1

The "dozing off"(打瞌睡)period

Stage 2

muscles, heart rate and brain activity slow down

Stage 3

deep, restorative sleep

Stage 4

REM(rapid eye movement)sleep, when brain activity increases and you're most likely to dream

The 20-minute nap

Between 20 and 30 minutes is one napping sweet spot, according to Mednick, who explains that you get enough Stage 2 sleep to switch your body and mind into full relaxation mode, aiding with memory.

The 60-minute nap

Stage 3 sleep is a time for your body to repair tissue, strengthen the immune(免疫)system and recharge energy stores. But waking up during this phase can make you feel uncomfortable and sleepy, Med nick says. Most people start to move out of Stage 3 after around 60 minutes, which makes it a good time to set your alarm.

The 90-minute nap

A complete sleep cycle is about an hour and a half, and napping for a full cycle can have big benefits. But naps longer than 90 minutes can disturb nighttime sleep and might even weaken memory.

Not a regular napper? That's OK. " Everyone needs to rest, but not everyone necessarily needs to nap," says Med nick.

On a Friday evening in December, two weeks before Christmas, I lost my job.  I hadn't seen it coming. I was excited for the weekend, when my daughter, Kristil, then 12, and I planned to get our Christmas tree. Then I listened to my voicemail:" We're sorry but your work assignment has ended as of today. "My heart sank. I wasn't just a single mother; I was the only parent. My paycheck was survival.

Over the next week, as my bank account grew smaller, I crazily applied for jobs, but I was defeated.

It had been snowing on and off all morning. I noticed a woman with short white hair struggling to open her car door against the wind. As she got out, I realized it was my old professor, Mrs. Heffernan. I hadn't seen her since we'd met for lunch three months ago.

I'd first met Mrs. Heffernan 10 years earlier when I was her student at Edge wood College. Kristil was 3 at the time, and I sometimes took her to class. Mrs. Heffernan was understanding and would bring coloring books to occupy Kristil.

Even after I graduated, Mrs. Heffernan kept in touch. I had grown to love her like family.

I rushed to the front of my building. "What are you doing out in this weather?" I asked as we hugged.

"Well, I tried to call last week but couldn't get through. Then I called your job and they said you weren't working there anymore, so I thought I would come by, "she said. "I have gifts for you and Kristil."

I made her a cup of tea and we talked. Just being in Mrs. Heffernan's presence gave me hope that things would be all right.

As she got up to leave she handed me a Christmas card and kissed me on the cheek. I walked her to her car and waved as she pulled away.

When I opened her card I was in shock. Hundred dollar bills fell onto the table. Tears of gratitude filled my eyes as I counted. Mrs. Heffernan had given me $1, 000.

The 2022 FIFA World Cup kicked off, with more than 30 teams participating. In the tournament's 92-year history, only eight countries have won: Brazil, Italy, France, Germany, Argentina, Spain, Uruguay and England.

It was the first time that the Cup had been held in the Middle East. Summer temperatures in Qatar regularly top 100 degrees, so for the safety of both athletes and audience, organizers pushed the month-long contest out to late November, when the weather is milder.

Uruguay was the first host and winner of the World Cup back in 1930. The final match played out in front of 60, 000 audiences. No World Cup was held between 1938 and 1950 due to World War Ⅱ. The 1950 tournament in Brazil featured separate East and West German teams. It wasn't until the 1994 World Cup that Germany took part as a unified team. West Germany won in 1954.

That 1950 Cup was also the first to feature England, despite soccer being an English invention. That year, Team USA beat England 1-0, though some British newspapers reported the result as USA 1, England 10, as editors believed the real score had a typo. Both sides believed it would bean easy win for England, and double-digit (两位数)goals were expected. This match is considered by many as one of the greatest upsets in World Cup history.

The first women's World Cup started many decades after the men's, in 1991. That first one was held in China. Our team is so dominant that we have won half of all the World Cups to date. The women play every four years, just like the men, but not on the same schedule. The next women's World Cup will be held in 2023 in Australia and New Zealand.

Aussie Ark is an animal preservation project based near the Barrington Tops of New South Wales, Australia. Originally known as Devil Ark, its original goal was to only breed(培育)and preserve Tasmanian devils(袋獾).

About the size of a big domestic cat, the Tasmanian devil is the world's largest living marsupial carnivore(有袋食肉动物). Its bigger cousin, the Tasmanian tiger, died out in 1936. Devil numbers were stable until 1996, when a strange disease suddenly began destroying devil populations across Tasmania. Devil facial tumour disease (DFTD), within a few months, is an infectious cancer spread by bites during fights over food and mates. There's still no cure despite a quarter-century of dedicated research, and devils have suffered an 80-90 per cent decline. A second type of DFTD, just as deadly, was identified in 2014.

After the devil was declared endangered in 2008, increased effort went into establishing isolated DFTD-free insurance populations. Tasmania's offshore Maria Island supports a small introduced group of healthy devils, and the Forestier-Tasman Peninsula has the only disease-free population in its native range, but Aussie Ark has more devils than both the above two and is the biggest and wildest mainland breeding facility. As an innovative and wildly successful conservation project, Aussie Ark has spent the last decade creating a healthy mainland population of the endangered Tasmanian devils, mainly by letting them act naturally in a large-scale bush shelter. A big part of its success is the suitability of its landscape. The Ark's cool-climate, high-altitude (1, 300m)snow-gum forest has proved very devil-friendly. Launched in 201l with 44 DFTD-free devils, Aussie Ark has bred more than 350 devil babies now, a record outside Tasmania, and holds over half the devils in mainland Australia.

It was 11 p. m. when Alex saw the woman on the Main Street Bridge. She was standing by the railing(栏杆),looking down at the rushing river below. Maybe she was fishing, Alex thought. He continued driving to his home a short distance away. His friend's car had broken down, so Alex was going home to get some tools before heading out to help. Tools in hand, he climbed into his car. Instead of taking a shortcut, though, he chose to head back over the bridge.

Something about that woman didn't sit right. Why would she be fishing this late at night in May, when it was still cold in this city? As he crossed the bridge, Alex saw the woman standing in the same spot. He pulled a U-turn and parked his car with the hazards(警示灯)flashing, blocking one of the four lanes(车道). In case there was trouble, he hoped another driver would take note and help. He stepped out of his car and got a clearer picture of the scene. The woman was in her 20s, dressed in pants and a heavy coat. She was crying while saying something. Alex didn't know exactly what was going on, but he knew exactly he should do something to help.

"Hey, what's going on?" Alex called out while approaching. The woman didn't answer or turn around. Alex stepped closer and stood with the woman side by side.

"What's going on?" he asked again. The woman kept silent for a while before she told Alex, but mostly talked to herself that she was going through a particularly tough period. She was jobless, not doing well in everything. In short, life wasn't working out as she'd hoped. "Not everything goes as planned," agreed Alex. He started talking about the ups and downs he'd faced in his life.
