Lantern Festival is one of the most famous traditional Chinese festivals. It's on the fifteenth day of lunar January. To celebrate it, many traditional Chinese culture events such as paper cutting, kung fu and calligraphy got introduced to schools. Schools do it to make young students to experience Chinese culture.

On that day in 2023, Beijing City International School had an event called Chinese Festival. It held some cultural activities like hanfu clothing, tea art and traditional Chinese medicine skills. They were warmly received by the students from home and abroad. It also invited some special persons to show their artworks or skills. Its purpose was to raise some money for those in need according to one of the heads of this school, Li.

Li is a big fan of traditional Chinese culture. She said the event was a good way to celebrate the Lantern Festival, because it could make her students have close touch with the Chinese cultural heritage （文化遗产）. Mark Sullivan is the secondary school headmaster of the school. He said they completely supported the Chinese culture event started by the students. They should love their roots and culture. We are also very proud of the cultural activities here. "

Zongzi is not just a food with rice and other delicious materials in it, but one of the symbols of the Dragon Boat Festival in China.

The festival is on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month. It is to remember the famous poet Qu Yuan in Chinese history. Zongzi, or rice dumpling, also shows the tradition of home cooking in different places.

There are different kinds of zongzi. Here are just several examples.

The most famous-Jiaxing zongzi

Jiaxing zongzi, named after the city Jiaxing in Zhejiang Province, is the most famous food during the Dragon Boat Festival thanks to Wufangzhai, the largest zongzi company here. More than 6, 000, 000Wufangzhai zongzi are on sale in stores across the country during the festival. Jiaxing also has the first and the only museum of zongzi.

The oldest-Xi'an zongzi

The cold honey zongzi has the longest history in Xi'an, a city in central China. Made with rice, cold honey zongzi without fillings(馅)is a great food for the hot summer.

The largest-Nanning zongzi

Each Nanning zongzi is about one kilogram. It is also called "pillow(枕头) zong" because of its large size and the middle part with fillings a little higher than two sides. In Guangxi, people once made the largest zongzi with 50 kilograms of rice and meat.

The smallest-Shanghai zongzi

The smallest zongzi is in Shanghai City. It is just right for one bite(咬). Some people like to enjoy it with a cup of Chinese tea.

According to the Chinese lunar calendar, winter months include solar terms(节气): Lidong(the start of winter), Xiaoxue(minor snow), Daxue(major snow ), Dongzhi(winter solstice), Xiaohan(minor cold) and Dahan(major cold).

Lidong(in November) is the beginning of winter. On this day, after a year of hard work people are happy to have a rest and spend more time with their family. The northern part of China celebrates Lidong as the small Spring Festival. People have dumplings and mutton soup.

Xiaoxue(in November) and Daxue(in December) come after Lidong. During Xiaoxue, northern China can expect snow and temperatures slowly fall below zero degree. Daxue means even more snow and a bigger temperature drop.

When Dongzhi(in December) comes, it brings the shortest day of the year and the longest night. Many places can expect the coldest weather. In ancient(古代的) times, people would start counting "nine cold periods"(数九寒天) from Dongzhi. Every cold period has nine days. They believed that after 81 cold days, spring would arrive.

Xiaohan(in January) usually brings the lowest temperature of the year. Finally, during Dahan(in January), the cold weather fills the fields with snow. All Chinese people are ready to welcome the Chinese New Year after Dahan. The Spring Festival, China's most important festival, falls at this time.
