Cool Inventions

For Light Sleepers

Millions of people have trouble falling asleep each night, which is why Light Sleeper was created.

Developed in the United Kingdom, Light Sleeper's makers say it can help a person fall asleep and also help a person fallback to sleep after waking up in the middle of the night.

Light Sleeper works by projecting(投射) a light on to the ceiling while the person is lying down. The idea is to watch the light, because the light moving in a circle has a relaxing effect.

One of the advantages of the product is that it won't disturb other people in the room. The product can be easily moved and will switch itself off after 30 minutes to save power.

Stop the Snoring(打鼾)

Here's a new product designed to slowdown the frequency and level of your snoring. The Snore Stopper has a sensitive instrument that will detect when you're snoring. Once it does that, it will send a very mild electronic signal to your wrist. This consequently changes your sleeping position to stop you from snoring. The Snore Stopper won't cause any damage to your body.

Get Your True Colors

Photoshop features a pen that will copy the color settings of what you are monitoring onscreen to use as a color in your pro-gram. Now an off-line product allows you to pick a color when not using the computer software.

The Color Picker is a concept pen. After placing the pen against an object, the user just presses the scan button. Color sensors (感应器) inside the pen send information to a box, which then mixes red, green and blue to produce the desired ink color.

Few sick people consider the quality of the food when choosing a hospital. Even in America, a country where private hospitals have long provided individual rooms with such comforts as personal cable television, patients are often still fed institutional food. "Mystery meat" and processed-cheese slices are common; everything gets cooked in a microwave.

More hospitals are starting to feed their patients better food. Intermountain, an on-profit group based in Utah that runs 32 hospitals across the Mountain West, has served freshly made meals to patients. Chefs in proper kitchen snow source local ingredients to serve in cafeterias. Doctors are consulted to meet patients' dietary needs. Christopher Delissio, the head chef at Intermountain, describes creating a meal for a Mexican child who was being treated for cancer. "He would not eat," Mr Delissio recalls, and that was making it harder for him to recover from chemotherapy. "I was able to go upon the floor and speak to this boy's parents and him and kind of figure out what he wanted," he says.

"The link between eating well and good health has long been clear," says David, a nutrition specialist at the Harvard School of Public Health. Heart disease, which has a direct connection to diet, is America's biggest killer. Roughly two-fifths of American adult s are clinically obese, and over 14% suffer from diabetes. "The right food can help patients avoid going back to hospital. Yet doctors themselves have often been slow to recognize the need to encourage healthy eating," says Dr Eisenberg. Most healthcare remains curative, rather than preventive.

A decade ago Henry Ford Hospital in West Bloomfield opened a teaching kitchen where staff could help patients plan affordable healthy meals and learn how to cook them. The idea is now spreading widely. In October a conference for health and food professionals in Los Angeles will encourage the adoption of such kitchens. Participants will tour a new one that has just opened at UCLA's hospital.

The most popular martial arts(武术) today originated in Asia, especially in China. Many martial arts were invented because people needed to defend themselves or protect others. Nowadays, people learn martial arts as a way of keeping fit or as a competitive sport, but they are still very useful for self-defense.

Martial arts are often referred to as either the soft ones or the hard ones. These term simply a way of dealing with your opponent's force. Soft martial arts, such as tai chi, teach you to use your opponent's force to defend yourself. Soft styles allow you to use flowing movements and timing to avoid your opponent's attacks. These martial arts are soft for the defender but not for the attacker! On the other hand, hard styles, such as kung fu, teach you to defend yourself using force. Techniques involve blocking, posturing, powerful hitting and kicking. Hard martial arts techniques are more effective if you are more skillful, more powerful and faster than your opponent.

Perhaps one of the best known Japanese martial arts today is karate. But did you know that its roots are derived from Fujian Province? In the 4th century, a community of Chinese migrants from Fujian settled in what was then the kingdom of Okinawa. The Chinese migrants used to gather in a park to enjoy cultural activities—one of which was kung fu. This soon caught the attention of local youths, who started learning kung fu from their Chinese neighbors.

In fact, Chinese influence on martial arts was not limited to kung fu. The very first Korean military training guidebook was based on a Chinese version. During the Japanese invasion of Korea in the 16th century, the Korean army needed an effective way to train a large number of troops. They adopted a training methodology(方法) from a Chinese military book called Ji Xiao Xin Shu, written by the famous Chinese general Qi Jiguang.

Wherever we go, we are surrounded by history. Across the globe, cultural heritage is passed down through the generations. It is in the buildings and structures around us. It is in the arts and artifacts we treasure. It lives in the languages we speak and the stories we tell. But today, it is under attack as never before. Not only is the damage of time threatening our cultural heritage, but conflicts, climate change, globalization and tourism are allexactinga heavy price. Technology is now the most essential weapon in the battle. Here's how technology is preserving our cultural heritage.

As you can imagine, creating the replicas(复制品) via 2D images is extremely time-consuming. Increasingly, artificial intelligence algorithms(算法) are being used to do all the required crowd sourcing(众包), allowing millions of images to be stored in a matter of hours. AI will also make restoration and preservation of existing cultural heritage far easier and vastly superior to previous methods.

Virtual Reality(VR) technology will play a leading role in preserving our cultural heritage in the coming years. Many of the most important sites and architectures are extremely fragile.Hu-man interaction with these locations is doing a great deal of harm. As more cultural heritage sites and objects are digitally mapped and recorded, VR technology will increasingly become the way that people experience them. We'll all eventually be able to walkthrough places, look at and touch artifacts and works of art without ever seeing them with our own eyes.

Finally, our cultural heritage will be preserved via technology. Efforts in research, innovation, data sharing and project work will help promote and preserve the cultural heritage of countries all across the world.

I was six years old and my sister, Sally Kay, was a submissive(顺从的) three. For some reason, I thought we needed to earn some money. I decided we should "hire out" as maids. We visited the neighbors, offering to clean houses for them for a quarter cents.

Reasonable as our offer was, there were no takers. But one neighbor telephoned Mother to let her know what Mary Alice and Sally Kay were doing. Mother had just hung up the phone when we came bursting through the backdoor into the kitchen of our apartment. "Girls," Mother asked, "Why were you two going a-round the neighborhood telling people you would clean their houses?"

Mother wasn't angry with us. In fact, we learned afterwards, she was amused that we had come up with such an idea. But, for some reason, we both denied having done any such thing. Shocked and terribly hurt that her dear little girls could be such "bold-faced(厚颜无耻的) liars", Mother then told us that Mrs. Jones had just called to tell her we had been to her house and said we would clean it for a quarter.

Faced with the truth, we admitted what we had done. Mother said that we had "fib bed(撒个小谎)". We had not told the truth. She tried to explain why a fib hurt but she didn't feel that were-ally understood.

Mother decided to teach us a lesson, one that we never forgot. Then an idea came to her in a flash. She cheerfully continued preparing for lunch.
