Towns across Italy have been racing to launch clever projects aimed at encouraging new residents to revive (复兴) their fortunes in recent years. From old homes selling for little more than a dollar to ready-to-occupy houses at knockdown prices, there's been a crazy competition.

The town of Presicce in the sunny region of Puglia is the latest to enter the game with a tantalizing offer. Officials say they'll pay people up to 30,000 euros to buy an empty dwelling (住宅) and take up residency.

Even better, the houses for sale as part of the deal are priced from around 25,000 euros. Like other cheap properties on sale across Italy, they've been long abandoned by their original owners. There's an added bonus: they're surrounded by the nature of the Salento area and close to beautiful beaches and greenish-blue clear waters of Santa Maria di Leuca.

"There're many empty homes in the historical center built before 1991, which we'd like to see alive again with new residents," says local official Alfredo Palese. "It's a pity to witness how our old districts full of history, wonderful architecture and art are slowly emptying."

"We'll be offering up to 30,000 euros to people willing to move here and buy one of these abandoned dwellings," he adds. "The total funding will be split into two: it'll go partly into buying an old home and partly into restyling it, if needed."

A 2019 merger (合并) with a neighboring community to create the larger town of Presicce-Acquarica has left extra money to ensure the project can continue for years to come. "After the merger, our wider territory will be blessed with more public funds, roughly 1,000,000 euros per year for several years forward, which we intend to invest to revitalize the old district," says Palese.

Together, Presicce and Acquarica have 9,000 residents but only half of them live in the older part of the community. So the town hall has already launched other projects to attract more residents, including tax benefits to set up new business activities and baby bonuses for families with kids.

Compost (堆肥) is one of the most wonderful things in the world. You take organic matter that would otherwise end up in landfills and create a nutrient-rich material that will help make gardens grow, flowers bloom and make it easier to feed the world. Thanks to Tipa, an Israeli start-up, you will soon be able to add plastics to your compost mix.

Plastic is one of the most challenging problems on the planet. As No Camels reports, it often takes 500 years for plastic to break down, and even then, microplastics remain in water or on land. Furthermore, according to Inc. Com, even though plastic can theoretically be recycled, less than 5 percent of flexible plastic packaging that is put into recycling by consumers is actually recycled.

But that doesn't need to be the case anymore.

Now, Tipa and other companies have begun to create plastics that are able to biodegrade like any organic matter does. When asked how she got the idea of creating compostable flexible plastics, Dafna Nissenbaum, the CEO and co-founder of Tipa, said, "Nature also packs its products, like bananas, apples and oranges, but with a compostable material. Our plastics will break down exactly like any other organic material and turn into solid fertilizer (肥料)."

Unlike other compostable plastics on the market, Tipa's plastics can be fully composted in home composts. This means that the average person with a garden compost could use their packaging and just throw it in the compost instead of the recycling bin when they are done with it.

Another thing that Tipa has been doing is to create partnerships with existing producers instead of creating their own factories. The company's materials are purposefully designed to be compatible (兼容的) with machinery that already exists and produces non-compostable plastics. Tipa says that fits in with its goal of creating a sustainable future.

Tipa has partnered with some high-end designers. Both Stella McCartney and Mara Hoffman use Tipa's products to package their products. Many brands are now aware that using sustainable packaging will endear them to customers, and Tipa helps them do that.

Standing out from the crowd isn't always a good thing.

Birds with uncommon traits like big beaks(喙), long tails and extended wings are more likely to be threatened and face extinction, new research finds.

"We are fascinated by the diversity of the planet's bird species. At the same time, we are deeply concerned about the threats these birds face," lead author Jarome Ali, a PhD candidate at Princeton University, says. Ali completed the research at Imperial College London.

For their work, researchers analyzed measurement data collected from 9, 943 bird species, which are about 99% of all living bird species. The information came from both living birds as well as museum specimens(标本). The measurements included beak size and shape, as well as the length of legs, tails and wings. Researchers combined the information on physical traits with the birds' risk of extinction. Next, they ran simulations(模拟) about what would occur if the most threatened birds were to become extinct.

"All our simulations showed that extinction has worse effects on the diversity of bird shapes than we expected. This is deeply concerning, but not shocking given that we first found that threatened birds were more unique than non-threatened birds," Ali says.

The researchers weren't sure what could explain the link between unusual birds and their extinction risk. "Unique birds are likely to play specialized roles in the ecosystem. One possible explanation is that as habitats come under threat, these specialized roles are likely to be the first to be targeted," Ali says. "For example, if you were a hummingbird and specialized to feed on a small subset of plants, then damage to your habitat would be worse than if you were a less unique bird that eats a whole range of foods."

"The loss of these rare birds has an impact on the environment because their role in the ecosystem is lost," Ali says. "Our findings imply that we cannot simply hope that non-threatened species will come in and fill the role of the threatened species."

I worked at a local university and our office was staffed with a few student workers. One of the students was a member of an amateur soccer team that needed a player. She overheard me talking to another student about how I'd always wanted to play soccer, but never got the chance. The soccer player offered to let me come and try out for the position.

I was excited and scared. Excited at the thought of doing something I'd always wanted to do, but scared that I was too out of shape and too old to keep up with athletic twenty-year-olds. There was no harm trying out, though. I agreed to be on the field for practice.

My husband and children thought I was crazy but I didn't care. I didn't move much while doing my job at the university and I'd just taken up running to turn back the clock a little. I had all the mom responsibilities, too. Between my work and family responsibilities, finding time for myself seemed impossible, but I knew playing soccer with kids would motivate me to keep active.

I showed up with butterflies in my stomach and low expectations. I just knew once they saw how out of shape I was, they'd let me kick the ball a few times and then look for a younger girl. During drills, I was slow and got breathless easily, but my desire to do that made me drive forward. Maybe they were touched by my spirit or maybe they just needed a player—they let me in anyhow.

I couldn't have been happier! They took my shirt size, jersey (球衣) number and my team name. I chose "Mama Platt" because it was what a couple of the students called me, and I chose my dad's soccer number from high school: 7. I still remember the moment I stood in a sporting goods store. Was that really happening? I couldn't believe it. These girls were actually going to let me be a part of the team!

2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

In order not to let my team down, I decided to improve myself.
