Polly Goodman, 82-year-old, was a rich old woman. Her husband was a businessman and left her a large fortune after his death, so she had no problems supporting herself. The only problem was that her son who was a doctor busy with his work seldom had time to visit her, leaving her living lonely.

One day, Polly was walking along the beach, like she did every evening near her seaside house, when she noticed a young boy and his little sister playing there. As she was passing by them, she heard their mother calling out to them. "Corey! Daisy! Be careful! Stay away from the water!"

Polly noticed their mother resting on a bench, appearing sick and tired. The dark circles under her eyes were quite obvious, and she coughed frequently. Polly always had a desire to have a chat with someone. So she walked carefully towards the mother with a kind smile on her face.

"Hi, I'm Polly. I live by the beach." Polly said.

The mother looked up at Polly, feeling a little surprised. The mother told Polly she was Lydia and had worked as a waitress. Lydia further said that she and her children had only recently moved to that location because her children had always wanted to see the ocean. Then Lydia stopped to cough heavily. After she calmed down, it seemed she wanted to say something, but stopped as if there was something difficult to tell. Polly did not follow up, saying goodbye and left.

When Polly went to the beach the next day, she saw the kids again, but this time their mother wasn't with them. She observed them playing by themselves until late in the evening before heading home. The third day came and again the two kids played at the seaside until late in the evening, still without their mother's company. Then the elder brother was about to lead the sister back home. Out of curiosity and care Polly decided to follow them to their house.

"Okay, boys, I just want to fill you in on a couple of important details," she told us. "A lot of the people in the audience are suffering from severe physical or mental disabilities. Also, many of them are very old. Don't let that alarm you. They have very few chances to see live entertainment of any kind, so they enjoy any kind of musical talent. Just play your regular show, and you'll do fine." With that, she left, going to help the volunteers and staff that were assisting the patients to their seats.

Soon enough, it was show time. Everything was perfect, and we played probably the best show of our lives. We hardly missed a note on any of our songs. Unfortunately, we couldn't enjoy our performance. As each song finished, there was a short pause. This was the time when the audience would normally applaud. Now, we were getting nothing. Zero. The deafening silence only made us more determined to win the audience over. We tried harder. Loud songs, soft songs, it made no difference. After forty-five minutes, we decided to end our set early. Why bother finishing when no one was appreciating us anyway? We unplugged(拔去）our instruments and went backstage.

Then the Spring came, and all over the country there were little blossoms and little birds. Only in the garden of the Giant it was still winter. The birds did not care to sing in it as there were no children, and the trees forgot to blossom. 

The only people who were pleased were the Snow and the Frost. "Spring has forgotten this garden," they cried, "so we will live here all the year round. " The Snow covered up the grass with her great white cloak(披风), and the Frost painted all the trees silver. "I cannot understand why the Spring is so late in coming," said the Giant, as he sat at the window and looked out at his cold white garden.

The Spring never came, nor the Summer. It was always Winter there, and the Frost and the Snow danced about through the trees. One morning the Giant was lying awake in bed when he heard some lovely music. It sounded so sweet to his ears that he thought it must be the King's musicians passing by. It was really only a little linnet(红雀) singing outside his window, but it was so long since he had heard a bird sing in his garden that it seemed to him to be the most beautiful music in the world. "I believe the Spring has come at last," said the Giant and he jumped out of bed to have a look outside.

About a month into the year, I was still trying to connect with Tyler. I can usually get students involved in class discussions or at least have them sit quietly and attentively. However, Tyler was often loud and sometimes rude.

He had been in so much trouble over the years. He expected his teachers to know about his pasts: about how many times he had been sent to the office or suspended from school. I had found that these solutions were not very effective and that students would return from the office behaving worse than before.

One day, Tyler was talking over me while I was teaching. I stopped my lesson and said, "Tyler, why don't you join in our discussion instead of having one of your own?" With that, he got up from his chair, pushed it over and yelled something. I can't remember what he said other than that he included some impolite words. I sent Tyler straight to the office, and he received a week's suspension.

To this point, this was one of my worst teaching experiences. Tyler's anger was almost too much for me. The week Tyler was suspended from school was a wonderful time, and we got a lot accomplished as a class. However, the suspension week would soon come to an end, and I was fearful of his return.

Things changed as spring came. We welcomed a new member of our family: our son Evan. I'd heard stories of animals' attacking babies before, so I always kept an eye on them. One evening I noticed Evan grabbed hold of the dog's tail. The irritated（被激怒的） dog paused and turned to look at his stuck tail, but then he waited patiently until being released. I relaxed a little. Still the stories I'd heard worries me. 

Then my worst fear occurred when I sat on the sofa reading and my wife worked at the dining-room table paying the bills. I saw Evan crawl （爬行） across the family-room carpet as he made his way behind the sofa, then Bailey quietly entered the room and headed to where Evan stayed. I nearly jumped out of my skin when I heard the dog start a fearful barking behind me.

It was one Saturday morning. Dave was playing in the gym by himself, as all the other boys were busy with other weekend affairs. Then he noticed a tall boy approaching. It was Lankas. Everybody knows him as captain of the school basketball team. "Hi, Lankas," Dave greeted him. " My name is Dave. " "Hi, Dave," Lankas replied as he got closer. " Nice to see you here. Do you need an opponent to play against?" Dave was shocked, frozen right there, unable to believe his ears but somehow, he answered, "Why not?"

So they picked Jack to be his replacement in the race. Jack knew he had no chance of beating Beadle, the best runner in the school. However, he would be happy if he just did okay in the race—he didn't want to let himself down.

Much to their surprise, something unusual happened when Jack put on the trainers. Usually Jack set out at a light jog at first when he practised running. But this time he reached top speed straight away. He didn't plan it—it just happened. It felt as if he was running on air. He zoomed round the park and kept picking up sped. In fact he just had to relax and the trainers did the running. However, Anna felt really upset. She knew no pair of normal trainers could make such a difference. Anna shook her head, "You shouldn't wear them in the race. It won't be YOU who wins, will it? Anyone could win if they wore those trainers." But Jack wouldn't listen. "I won't give them up. These trainers are my only chance to win that Championship. I don't need your help!" he shouted. With that he turned and ran off like a speeding train.

With my heart just about pounding out of my body, I called up the president of Global Television. Suddenly Mr. Slaight was on the phone. "I've heard that your studio facilities are amazing. I could come at eleven o'clock on Monday or eleven o'clock on Sunday for a tour. What would suit you better?" I caught him totally off guard. He stuttered a bit, and then picked a day. When I hung up, I was scared but excited.

I arrived at the studio on the appointed day. When Mr. Slaight took me around, he looked at me and said, "What do you want?" He sounded furious but curious. "All I want is a chance to audition(试镜). I just want you to know my face. That's all I'm asking.

I didn't know whether I'd ever hear from him again, but two weeks later, his secretary called. "Mr. Slaight wants to know if you'd like to come and audition for a new school life show." I immediately answered, "Sure!"

When I picked the figs with him, he told me about how he had been living in the house next door for close to twenty years. He said, "Bruce, the owner of the house you live in now, used to be my best friend. And we had planted this very fig tree a few years before he went to the nursing home." I was amazed to know that we actually enjoyed the fruit of his work. He told me that he was so impressed by the quality of the fruit this year. I found a fruit box for him to put the figs in. Both of us enjoyed the pleasure of sharing.

When Jack set out for his home, I turned to my parents and advised doing something in return for Jack and Bruce's kindness and friendliness.

I was determined to help him. I read every article and bought every book. With the help of great resources, I found my son had the tendency to see the worst in every situation. My research told me that people with negativity have an emotional need for order and sensitivity. That meant I needed to listen to my son's daily pessimistic reports. My usual reaction was to try to talk Jake out of his negativity, but that wouldn't satisfy his need for sensitivity, so I had to let him finish his complaints and ask what good things happened. Then I needed to wait until he could tell me. This would help Jake realize that good things really were happening to him.
