The art of Chinese calligraphy is both a form of writing and a form of art and our course will also provide Chinese literature and philosophy(哲学) behind Chinese calligraphy. Many calligraphy learners shared that continuous practice of calligraphy would help in one's concentration power and cultural refinement.

No experience is required and detailed instruction will be provided. Besides, we'll prepare everything needed. After taking this course, students will be able to master some basic Chinese calligraphy techniques, and understand how art and inner peace go together through the art of brush.

The Analects of Confucius Course

Most Americans are interested in Confucian philosophy, but they know little about it and do not appreciate how it can be a resource for today's living. This course offers advice on how to appreciate The Analects of Confucius. No experience is required but you need to bring a computer with Internet connection.

One morning, Charlie Latuske woke up feverish in his home in Surrey in the UK, leaving him unable to function. He'd had a sore throat for a few days, believing it would get better, but that morning, he knew that he was in need of a doctor.

"I was quite out of it," said 27-year-old Latuske, who was also expected to go on vacation with his wife in just three days.

Short on time, he feared the idea of calling his local physician only to wait days or to wait in a long line for an appointment, "I just needed to be seen without messing around with long lines of people," he said. "When you're that ill, that's the last thing you want to do."

These days, the solution is somewhat easier, thanks to the Internet.

Latuske's wife showed him a private medical app with which he could see a doctor w thin the hour—virtually. For £30, he could signup, share his symptoms(症状) and video-call a doctor in the UK using the digital health provider Push Doctor. The app is on c of many now available(可用的) worldwide to help people in need of medical attention who are unable to get to a doctor for various reasons.

"I was highly skeptical," he said, adding that he didn't trust such a service and questioned the professionalism of doctors available through it. "But I was in great need of a doctor."

Within 20 minutes, he was speaking with a doctor, who soon diagnosed(诊断) him with tons ii is, a common disease.

Within the hour, he was at his nearest drug store, collecting medicines. And three days later, he was on vacation, as planned.

"I was impressed by the efficiency of the whole thing," he said.

Blood maybe thicker than water when it comes to human relationships and it seems that the same is true of jackdaws(寒鸦) after scientists found they readily change friends to gain food but stick with family even at the risk of going hungry.

Alex Thornton, a professor of leaning ability development, said, "We kept track of hundreds of wild jackdaws, each of which was equipped with a small chip. In this experiment we divided jackdaws into two groups—A or B—and programmed a pair of computer-controlled devices(装置) to provide worms. Only if individuals from the same group (AA or BB) visited together, will they get the worms." If birds from different groups arrived together—A with B―the feeders would remain closed. Single birds would I get seeds(种子), but not the worms that they preferred.

Thornton said, "We wanted to find out if jackdaws could build new relations with new partners. They might have friends in the wrong group. Do jackdaws leave them and start to hang out with individuals who are in the right group? The jackdaws turned out to be very smart quickly learning to give up friends from the wrong group to get the best food. However, they acted differently when it came to their close relations even if they got nothing.

Thormton said jackdaws were an excellent subject matter as they were clever and had energetic social networks. "You've got individuals coming and going far beyond their strong relationships, and they have lots of other company. They are similar to human society." Michael Kings, of the University of Exeter, said, "These results help our understanding of the development of intelligence as they show that being able to track and remember information about social partners can bring them good."

When young, my parents took me to a zoo. I remember looking in admiration at two bears in a cage. Things have changed. My kids would be afraid to see animals in cages. Today, we expect animals to be held in more natural environment, and for zoos to do more to make the world a better place.

Zoos can host great conservation(保护) work. Sometimes they hold and protect endangered animals. About 40 seriously endangered animal species exist mainly in zoos. They are us for study, reproducing(繁殖) programs and even to reintroduce the animals to the wild. But not many zoos do enough ofthis. I support the recommendation of some researchers that zoos should spend at least 10%of their money on biodiversity(生物多样性) conservation. Sadly, a 1999 study showed an average spending of only 0.1%.

If zoos totally concentrate on protection, we might expect them to mostly house threatened species. But many zoos focus on the big animals that draw audiences to make money. I say that's inappropriate(不合适的). I don't mean zoos shouldn't be a business. Since care of animals can be extremely expensive, it's reasonable for zoos to open their doors to earn some money, as long as animals are kept in acceptable conditions.

Visiting animals in real life helps develop an appreciation for the natural world. Virtual-reality (VR) glasses and movies about wildlife are worthwhile, but not the same. A friend of mine who works in the Amazon puts it this way: "To love the forest, you need to smell the forest."

Conservation should come first for all zoos, together with education and research. Without that, a zoo becomes just a business: one that the world would be better off without.
