A Young Apple Tree
One day, a poor farmer called Jim takes a young apple tree to his house. It is a 1from his friend. The farmer is very happy with the gift and sings songs on the way home, 2he doesn't know where to plant it.
Next morning, he still thinks about the question. He is afraid that if he plants (种）the tree near the road, people will 3the fruit. If he plants the tree near his farm, people will come at night and take some of the apples. If he plants the tree near his 4, his children will take the fruit.
Finally, he has a good idea. He plants the tree in the forest. But there isn't enough sunlight or 5soil (土壤), his tree is soon dead (死的).
A few days later, the friend comes to his house and asks the farmer, "6do you plant the tree in this bad place?" The farmer 7him in surprise (惊讶) because he doesn't know why his friend asks this question." Is it 8? I think it's the same for me, because I can get nothing from it." says the farmer.
"Yes," says the friend," "if you plant it in a place with sunlight, you will enjoy the fruit and many people can 9enjoy it. But now nobody can enjoy the fruit, you 10a good apple tree bad. I don't think it is right". The farmer's face turns red.
