    Before she goes to bed, Holly leaves a bowl of dog food and a bowl of water outside the conservatory door.

    Then she goes to bed and lies there in the dark, listening and listening.

She wakes up suddenly in the early morning.She jumps out of bed and rushes downstairs.She opens the conservatory door.

    The food bowl isempty. But the water in the other bowl is frozen.

    "Eco!" She calls out.

    She waits.

    "Eco!" She tries again.

    But the garden isemptyand still.

    A window opens upstairs.

    "Don't stand outside in the cold, Holly,"

    Her father says. "It's freezing."

    Holly looks up but everything looks strange and blurred.
