Cigarette smoking causes ninety percent of lung cancer. It causes mouth cancers. Heart disease(疾病) is commonly found in heavy smokers as well. 442000 people in the United States die each year of illnesses caused by cigarette smoking. The American Cancer Society says smoking is the main cause of death today!

Smokers have a choice in the matter. However, what about those who don't smoke and yet are affected (影响) by smoking? Secondhand smoke is becoming a serious problem in this country. About 3, 000 nonsmoking people die of lung cancer each year as a result of breathing secondhand smoke. Smoking also causes 35, 000 deaths a year from heart disease among nonsmokers. Secondhand smoke, or environmental tobacco smoke, causes headaches, nausea(作呕), and dizziness(昡晕).

Cigarette smoking has long been stopped on television and on the radio. In November 1998, outdoor cigarette advertising (广告) wasbanned. Many states have banned smoking in all bars, restaurants, and clubs. These are all ways to stop suffering (遭受)secondhand smoke.
