Wuzhen is a water town in Zhejiang Province. From Oct. 15, 2021 to 24, the town hosted the 8th Wuzhen Theater Festival.
The festival had 12 theaters, where 23 selected plays were staged(上演). They included Ago(《曾经如是》, a play by director Stan Lai, and a remake of the French classic The Red and the Black by Meng Jinghui.
Outside the theaters, there were hundreds of performances on the streets and canals(水道). They were called the outdoor carnivals(古镇嘉年华). But it is the Emerging Theater Artists Competition, also known as the "Youth Competition(青年竞演)", that has made the theater festival stand out. There were 18 groups performing their new works.
Teenagers and children have taken part in the festival, too. Children's performing groups from Beijing, Shenzhen and Guangzhou brought konghou performances, children's plays and puppet(木偶) shows.
