Derek was always the last student to leave the band room. It was his favorite place at school. Since this was the last day of class, he stayed longer than usual. As he was about to leave, he felt a hand on his head: "Are you excited about Jazz Band Camp next week?" Mr. Boxwell asked. Derek was the only student at James Madison Middle School accepted into the famous camp.
"Yes, Mr. B," Derek said quietly. "What if I don' t play well?"
Mr. Boxwell smiled and said, "You' re the best saxophone player I've taught. You will surprise the people at camp with your talent. "
Derek looked down at his shoes. He wasn't sure how to tell Mr. Boxwell that he had never been to summer camp. What would the food be like? What if he got lost in the woods?
Mr. Boxwell knew what Derek was thinking. He looked at Derek's eyes and said, "Well, I did miss my mom's cooking, but I was surprised by how quickly I made friends with the other kids."
Hearing this, Derek laughed. He left the band room with his teacher happily.
