UNLIKELY FRIENDS
An 83-year-old store owner and a high-school student may sound like a strange pair, but they are good friends. Bill Jones is sixty nine years older than Ken Maldini. They are part of the Back To School project. Back To School matches an older person with a teenager for 10 weeks to see what happens. Afterward, the project makes a movie about the pair.
Mr. Jones and Ken are different in many wavs. Mr. Jones lives with his son and grandchildren, but he doesn't have much contact with them. He is successful in many other ways. He has a small store and he is a famous actor on a TV show. He exercises every day. Mr. Jones is very good at bowling and badminton. He doesn't have a good opinion of most teenagers. He seems unfriendly. Ken, on the other hand, seems very friendly. He plays a lot of video games. Ken doesn't exercise very much. He is not very fit at all.
The two find out they have common interests. One is comic books. Mr. Jones sells comic books in his store, including Spiderman. Ken is a fan of Spiderman. Mr. Jones and Ken talk about superheroes. One day, Ken asks Mr. Jones to come to his house for lunch. They eat pizza and read comics, two things they both enjoy. After that, they play video games together.
Their relationship changes the two new friends. Mr. Jones decides to help Ken. He takes Ken to his TV show. He introduces Ken to the other actors. He also helps the teen with physical activities. This helps Ken perform well on the school fitness test. At the end of the ten weeks, both Ken and Mr. Jones have better fitness, and they are both happier. They are unlikely, but good friends.
