Run with the pancakes Every year in February, people in different places around the UK hold pancake races to celebrate Pancake Day. They have to flip (翻转) the pancake while they run. The races came from a funny story. In 1445, a woman was cooking and was late for a party. She ran to the party with a pancake in a pan. Traditionally, it is a race for housewives only. However, there are not many rules now as it was. ____ The British hold a competition on Cooper's Hill in the small English village of Brockworth every year. Hundreds of people run quickly down a 180 - meter course down the hill to catch a rolling (滚动的) cheese. Because the hill was so steep (陡峭的) that many competitors fell off the mountain like cheese and broke their bones, local medicals are ready. The person who catches the cheese first wins the game. Fight with tomatoes On the last Wednesday of each August, people in Spain have a big tomato fight festival. The streets of the Eastern Spanish town of Bunol were the perfect examples of "painting the town red", as thousands of people throw each other with tomatoes. The beginning of the festival dates back to 1945. The festival continues to draw large crowds today. |
