Redwoods are the tallest trees in the world. They grow to be as high 380 feet. A redwood would impress you greatly if you stood near one. But why do they grow so tall?
It's hard to see redwoods from the ground, but they are competing. They are with each other to get the most sunlight. The trees that get the most sunlight grow taller. Trees that get stuck under other trees don't get much light. This way, they lose the chance to grow than others. So redwoods use all their to compete to grow tall, or they will get trapped on the bottom.
However, growing tall sometimes causes lots of trouble. Their lives might be safer and easier if they didn't have to grow so tall. But there is no way them to stop growing. So they have to compete their whole lives.
