I worked at a coffee shop in a very remote(偏僻的) area. I wasn't pleased with having to work during New Year's Eve, but about halfway through my shift(轮班), I saw someone who made me feel grateful that I would at least be able to go home to share the dinner with my family.
It was a cold day. The weather was awful with an icy wind and near-freezing rain. As looked out of the store window, I saw a young man walking along the road, expecting to get free rides from the passing cars, There was very little traffic, and the few vehicles passing by were driven by people. who were rushing home and couldn't be bothered to pick up a stranger. I expected the young man to come in to warm up or drink a cup, of hot coffee, but he just kept on walking even though he was trembling (颤抖) in the cold.
I thought about how it felt like to be alone and try to hitch a side(免费搭车) in such bad weather on such a special day, and my heart went out to him. Wherever he was going, it was clear that he stood no chance of making it to his destination in time for the dinner.
I was alone, so I couldn't leave the store to help out. Then I called ray parents. I knew that they were busy preparing the big dinner for the whole family. I explained about the young man and asked them if they could help him out. Without any hesitation, they agreed.
After a short while, I saw my parents' car. It stopped beside the young man and there was a quick exchange of words. The man nodded his head thankfully, and then the car drove off. I saw the look of surprise, disbelief, gratitude, and pleasure that I would never forget appeared on the face of the young man.
