Natural resources are things that we use that come from Earth. Our natural resources are limited. This means that they will not last forever. Some are renewable（可再生的）, like when you plant a new tree when you cut one . Others are not renewable, like when you dig coal out of the ground. Once it is used, it is gone. 

People realize the  that Earth's natural resources are limited, and can do things to help conserve（节约）those resources. When you try to conserve a natural resource, you try to use less of it, so it does not get used up so fast. One way that people conserve fuel, like gasoline, is by riding a bicycle or walking when the  is short instead of driving everywhere. 

Water is a very important natural resource because we all need it to stay alive. We can conserve water making sure that our pipes and taps do not leak（漏） . We can also make  choices to conserve water, like only using the dishwasher or washing machine when they are full. Everyone can make contributions to protecting natural resources. 

It was Career（职业）Week at school. Each day, a different person came to talk about his or her career. Kelly's class had visited a fireman, an artist and a doctor. All the talks were interesting. Kelly was 1 to think of all the careers he could have.

During the last winter holiday, I went to China with my parents. The five—day trip left me with a deep impression. 

As the capital of China, Beijing is a very beautiful city with fresh air and clean streets which make the travelers feel very pleased. To my surprise, many people there were learning English. Later I was told that they did so because Beijing would hold the 29th Olympic Games and they wanted most foreigners to understand them. They strictly kept the traffic rules. When there was a red light, no one was seen crossing the street. 

Of all the places I visited, I liked the Summer Palace best. To our surprise, although it was winter when we were there, we still saw green trees and many fresh flowers, The whole park was very beautiful. 

We visited a very modern football field. We were told the buildings where the Olympic Games would be held were even better than that. I also enjoyed skiing in Xiangshan. Skiing is an interesting and exciting sport liked by many people. 

In my eyes, China is a nice place and Chinese people are very kind. At Beijing Station, there were so many people, and most of them were going home to spend the Spring Festival—the most important Chinese festival, with their families. Passengers helped each other carry luggage （行李）, and they were very kind to foreigners. We were given a card by the hotel we stayed at, on which was the address of the hotel. With the card we never got lost in the city. 

The five days passed quickly, but the trip left me a lot of sweet memories. 

American boys and girls love to watch television. Some children spend six hours a day in school and four to six hours a day in front of the television set. Some even watch television for eight hours or more on Saturday. 

Televisions are like books or films. A child can learn bad things and good things from them. Some shows help children to understand the news and places from other countries or other times in history. With television a child does not have to go to the zoo to see animals or to the ocean to see a ship. Boys and girls can see a play, a concert or a game at home. 

Television brings many places and events into our homes. Some programs show crime and other things that are bad for children, so parents sometimes help them to find other interesting

things to do. 

Long long ago, people lived on wild animals, fruits and other plants and they didn't need to use money, 

As time passed, families had more products（产品） than they needed, such as animals and crops. So they needed to trade with others. They began to use money to make it easier. However, it was not like the money we use today. They used shells, rice, salt or large stones. 

During the 600 BC, people began using coins as money. Because they were easier to carry than goods（货物）, countries began to make coins as their money. 

The Chinese were the first to use paper money, probably in the 11th century. An Italian traveler, Marco Polo, saw the Chinese use paper money when he visited China in the 1200s. After his travel, he told the western people what he saw. But European countries didn't start using paper money till the1600s. 

Today people have many ways to pay for things, such as coins, paper money and cards. Some prefer to pay by card. That's because paying with a card is easier and safer than carrying around a lot of "real" money. 

Note—taking is a skill that can help you do well in all your schoolwork. It can make you confident（自信的） when you are studying. 

If your teacher writes notes on the blackboard, that's great. You can copy them or write down the most important facts of all in class.  For example, some teachers may focus on lots of dates and facts in class, but they only write the important ones on the blackboard. Other teachers may not write anything down, but they may repeat them. 

Don't try to write down every word in class. Some students really learn better with the help of these notes. 

  If your teacher speaks too fast and you can't follow what he is saying, you can ask him after class. 

Comparing your notes with your classmates' can be good for your learning. 

Note—taking also needs organization. Keep notes for each subject in one place, so that you can find everything easily when a test comes. 
 

Lu Xun is one of the greatest Chinese writers of the 20th century. Besides his famous stories, he also wrote many influential articles about the living conditions of Chinese people. 

Born in 1881 to a wealthy family, Lu Xun had a happy childhood. In 1893, however, his grandfather, a senior government official, was put into prison for taking money. At the same time, his father became seriously ill. From that time on, his family were no longer accepted by their relatives and friends. These early experiences greatly influenced his writing. 

By the time Lu Xun arrived in Nanjing to study at university in 1899, he already believed that Chinese society had to change and become modern. In 1902 he went to study in Japan. There, he began writing articles for several Chinese student magazines. He showed a gift for writing and translating and he even wrote several books, although none was popular. He returned to China in 1909 because he was in need of money.
