Many people may sometimes wish it could be summer all year round. However, as nice as summer is, we really need the other seasons as well.

Then why do we have different seasons? We know that the Earthspinson its own axis (轴线). This makes day and night. In 24 hours the Earth turns round once. When we are facing the sun, it is day. When we face away, it is night. Simple!

We travel around the sun in a circle. So why does it get colder in winter and hotter in summer? It's because the axis of the Earth is tilted (倾斜的). It means that in summer some places, such as the UK, are leaning towards the ssun. The temperature rises. As the Earth travels around the sun, these places begin to tilt away and the temperature drops. It becomes winter.

This is why when the UK has winter, Australia has summer. Imagine having Christmas dinner on the beach! But not all countries have seasons. Countries near the equator (赤道), the line which goes round the middle of the Earth, don't have different seasons. The weather stays almost the same temperature all the year round. Can you think why this is? The middle doesn't tilt very much, does it? This means the seasons don't change much.

Then what about the North and South Pole? What are the seasons like there? Because they get very far away from the Sun, their seasons are very extreme. There are only two seasons near the North and South Pole: winter and summer. What's more, they only have one sunrise and one sunset a year. It is dark for six months of the year and light for six months of the year. What problems would there be if you had to live somewhere that was dark for six months of the year and light for six months of the year?

There once was a man and a woman who had been married for more than 60 years. They talked about everything. They kept no secrets from each other…except that the old woman had a shoe box in the top of her closet and she told her husband never to open it or ask her about it.

For an these years the husband had never thought about the box, but one day the little old woman got very sick and the doctor said she would never recover.

In trying to sort out things they had, the little old man took down the shoe box from the top of the closet and took it to his wife's bedside. She agreed it was time that he should know what was in the box.

When he opened it, he found two beautifully crocheted (钩针编织的) doilies (装饰垫) and some money. He counted the money. It was $25,000 in total. He asked his wife about the unusual contents.

"When we were married," she said, "my grandmother told me the secret of a happy marriage was to never argue. She told me that if I ever got angry with you, I should just keep quiet and crochet a doily."

The little old man was so moved, and he had to fight back tears. Only two precious doilies were in the box. She had only been angry with him two times in all those years of living and loving. He was filled with joy and happiness.

"Sweetheart," he said, "that explains the doilies, but what about all this money? Where did it all come from?"

"Oh," she said, "that's the money I made from selling the doilies."

Money makes the world go around, yet the best thing in life is free. A penny saved ls a Penny earned, but you get what you pay for. Do you have your own ideas about spending money wisely? If no, now it's a great time to learn how to spend it. Follow the steps below when you are considering buying something you want.

How much do you really want?

Seeing a $25 gum ball (口香糖球) machine, Ben wanted it at first. But after thinking about it, he thought that it would be exciting for only a day or two." "Besides, it's impossible for me to chew that much gum," he said wisely.

Do you still want it a week later?

If the thing passes the "really-want-it" test, try to wait for some time to see how strong the desire (欲望) is. This method works for grown-ups too!

How will you pay for it?

After the first two steps, Ben found he really wanted a toy pirate ship, but it cost $50. He had $23 in his pocket and he got $1.5 a week from his parents. It would take Ben 18 weeks to save enough money to get the ship.

Are there ways to earn money?

Ben agreed to wash the downstairs windows at $2 each. So he got $10 for himself.

    Can you get it cheaper?

After deciding to buy it, it is necessary for you to look for ways to buy it at lower prices: search for what you want on the Internet or in shops and flea markets (跳蚤市场). Sometimes you can find the same thing at a much lower price.

If these suggestions work well, you can save a lot of money. You will be a really smart shopper.

Laozi or Lao Tzu, who lived in the 6th century BC, was a well-known philosopher in ancient China. He was the founder of Taoism. His teachings have been passed down through centuries and today there are still many followers of Taoism.

Famous and respected as he is. Laozi's personal life is still a mystery and there are many stories about his birth and life. The only reliable biography of him is Shiji written by historian Sima Qian of 145 BC. According to Shiji, Laozi was born in Ku County of the state of Chu, the present day Luyi County of Henan Province. His family name was "Li", and "Dan" was his designation (字).

At first, Laozi worked as a historian at the royal court (王朝) of the Zhou Dynasty. Later, he went on a trip to the west and met the guardian of the Hangu Pass (函谷关) who asked Laozi to write a book to record his wisdom for the good of the country.

Upon his request, Laozi began writing his famous book—Daodejing. Daode means "virtue". So the title can be translated as "Classic of the Virtue". After finishing writing the book, the wise old man left Hangu Pass. No one had seen him or known where he was ever since.

However, because of the fact that none of the original texts about Taoism have any reference about the life and death of Laozi, today many researchers have the opinion that Daodejing was in fact not written by Laozi alone. Some even say that Laozi was never a real person but can be referred to any old wise man in ancient China who taught philosophy.

Most people would get a doll or a toy from their parents when they were young. Sometimes they might like it much that they wanted more of it. Then they were in their way to become a real collector. Many collectors, young and old, start out in the same way: Their parents give them a toy, and another one, and another one, until the shelf is full all kinds of toys. Other collectors begin collecting when their parents or grandparents pass down (they) own collections. However they start, collectors are people take their interests to a whole new level.

Here are some reasons why collecting is so cool. One of many benefits you can get from collecting things (be) just having as much fun with it as possible. Nothing can be more exciting than seeing your collection arranged (careful) on a shelf or in albums, ready for the world (see). There is also that excitement from waiting for a new toy or book. Another good thing about (collect) is that you get to learn so much as well. Many collectors learn a lot about the things they collect and become experts. An even cooler thing about having your own collection is that it can (sell) at a high price after a few years if it's a very special one.

Collecting items is not only fun pastime but also a way to earn money. If you do not know how to begin your collection, ask your mum or dad for help, or visit a museum to find something that may interest you.
