British people are famous for apologizing (道歉) in almost every situation.  1 we are apologizing for asking a question, for our bad weather or we sneeze before others (打喷嚏),we are probably the number-one nation for apologies.

We pride ourselves on our polite2 in public. As a result, we use the word "sorry" quite a lot—even when we don't really 3 it! Usually, if you want to ask someone for the time, you would start by saying "Sorry to bother you. Do you know the time?" If you're five minutes late for an appointment (约会), you would generally  4 the person by saying "Sorry, I'm late!"

We use the word "sorry" in so many different situations that the meaning of the word has slightly 5over time. The two main dictionary definitions (定义) of "sorry" are: feeling sad for someone else because of their problems or feeling regret because you've done something wrong. Usually, when you want to ask a stranger a question, you 6 with "Sorry to disturb you." In this situation, we aren't saying sorry because we feel sad for that person or because we feel regret.

So what does "sorry" really mean? Well, in the British 7, saying "sorry" is a way to be polite, especially to people who you don't know very well. It's also a very 8way to get what you want. 9, an actor asked different people on a rainy day if he could use their mobile phones. When he asked one group of strangers without apologizing first, he was only 9 per cent successful in borrowing their phones. 10, when he apologized to another group about the bad weather before asking if he could use their mobile phones, he was 47 per cent successful. So maybe saying "sorry" is not just being polite, but it is also a good method to get what you want too!

Captain(船长) Nemo invited me and my friends to go hunting with him in the forests of Crespo Island. I asked him why he was so interested in Crespo Island, "I thought you preferred the sea to being on land."

"I do," replied the captain. "But these forests are under the sea."

After going through a door, we were about ten metres under the water. The light from the sun reached us. Everything looked very colourful. We were going deeper and deeper. At 100 metres deep, we could see quite well, and Captain Nemo stopped and pointed to some dark shapes. This was the forest. The "trees" in the forest were giant seaweed(海草), and all their "branches" were vertical(垂直的).We could not stop looking at them. Fish swam around the branches like birds in a forest.

Suddenly, I saw a large sea spider about a metre tall. It was going to attack me. Captain Nemo's man killed it with his gun, but it reminded me that the sea could be as dangerous as it was beautiful. When we reached 150 metres, it was dark. The sun's light could not reach this depth(深度). We turned on our lights. We could see about 20 metres around us. Finally, we found Crespo Island—where a steep rock wall rose in front of us.

We could go no further, so we walked back towards the Nautilus. Suddenly, Captain Nemo stopped and shot an animal with his gun, it was a beautiful and rare sea otter(水獭). At last, we could see the Nautilus. Several large sharks swam over us. Luckily they didn't see us. We re-entered the Nautilus safely. I was tired but amazed by what I had seen.

"The hound(猎犬)!" cries Holmes. "Come, Watson! Come."

We run quickly over the moor(荒野). We hear one last cry. A man is lying on the ground. As we approach(靠近) we see the dead body of Sir Henry Baskerville. He is wearing his brown suit.

"Oh, no!" says Holmes, "This man has a beard!"

Indeed Selden is dead instead of Sir Henry.

"So it is all clear to me. I remember that Sir Henry gave his old suit to Barrymore, and Barrymore probably gave it to Selden—his wife's brother."

"Then Selden is dead because of this suit," says Holmes.

"Think, Watson! Someone gives the hound some of Sir Henry's clothes—probably the boot from the hotel in London. The hound picks up Sir Henry's scent and runs after this poor man."

Suddenly we see Stapleton walking towards us. He says, "There was a strange noise. I was worried about Sir Henry. I wanted to check if he was all right."

    "Really?" asks Holmes.

Stapleton looks at Holmes. "Why, it is Mr. Sherlock Holmes, the famous detective! Can you solve the mystery of the Hound of the Baskervilles?"

Holmes shrugs his shoulders," We cannot solve every mystery. Anyway I will return to London tomorrow."

"Oh, will you return to London tomorrow?"

    "Yes."

So Holmes and I walk off to Baskerville Hall and Stapleton walk to his home.

Holmes thinks Stapleton is dangerous. But we have no proof that Stapleton is the murderer.

"There are no marks on Sir Charles's body. We know that he died of fright, but we can't prove anything."

"Things are becoming clear to me," Holmes says to Sir Henry. "It's a very difficult case. And you must help me to catch this hound."

We are surprised to see one portrait(画像) of a thin man is Sir Hugo, the first victim of the Hound of the Baskervilles. And he's like both Sir Henry and Stapleton. "Stapleton is a Baskerville," replies Holmes. "So he wants to inherit(继承) the Baskerville fortune, and he…," I say. It's an important clue.

The days of having to carry a phone charger(充电器) everywhere could soon be over. Researchers from America have made great progress in getting energy from human motion(运动). They say smartphones could get enough power just by the motion of fingers on the screen.

The low-cost device(装置) has already been tested in an American university. Scientists successfully showed an LED touch screen, a total of 20 LED lights and a keyboard, all with a simple touching or pressing motion and without the help of a battery.

"What I predicted is the possibility of not having to charge your smartphone for a whole week, for example, because that energy will be produced by your motion," said one of the researchers.

The completed device is as thin as a piece of paper. Electrical energy is created when you press it. The device used to power the LED lights is the size of a hand while the device used to power the touch screen is as small as a finger.

The device will become more powerful when folded. Each time you fold it, the energy you create will be doubled. You can start with a large device, but when you fold it once, and again, and again. It's now much smaller, but it has more energy. It may be small enough to put in a specially made heel(脚后跟) of your shoe so it can create power each time your heel knocks the ground. The researchers are also developing technology that would send the power produced from the heel strike to an earphone.
