I had made up my mind a long time ago that I would not give homeless people money, because I could never be sure what that money would be used for.  1  , I decided, I would buy them a sandwich, a cold drink on a hot day, a cup of coffee,  2 I could manage.

I was on my way home from work on a  3   city street full of busy people. That's when I saw a homeless man outside a Starbucks. He was moving back and forth  4 warm, and gently asking for  5. He spoke so quietly that I could hardly hear him. The idea that I would buy this man a sandwich and coffee flashed(闪过) 6  my mind, which made me 7  , turn around and walk into the Starbucks.

Just as I was leaving the store, two policemen were walking towards the man. 8  the shop owners had complained about the man and the police were there to draw him away from the storefronts. Without thinking twice, I ran towards them, asking one of the officers whether I   9  give the man something before he went. I was not sure why I asked the permission(允许) but the policeman said sure. I just handed the bag of food to the surprised man and  10  home.

On the way home I couldn't help thinking, "I hope people  11 that". Then I had to seriously ask myself why I hoped people had seen me give the man a sandwich from Starbucks. Was it 12   I wanted people to think, "She's such a  13  person"? I continued to wonder this all evening.

The next morning it came to me. I wanted people to have seen that small act of kindness not so that I would receive praise but so that they might be14  to do the same. Thus the whole spirit of giving would be 15 . Only in this way can the kindness be passed on and the world will be a more wonderful place to live in.

Dear Santa,

Thank you for all of the great gifts you give me this Christmas.

My parents can't seem to decide whether you gave the presents directly, or if you just helped them and my grandma pick out the right presents. So, if you are advising her, please tell her next year that I do not own a Wii.

I don't remember asking you for so many pairs of pants, but thank you for giving me the chance to try them on in the front of my whole family. I enjoyed them so much that I continued to wear them, with the tags (商标) still on.

My mom and the holiday movies are always quick to remind me that Christmas isn't about the presents. It's about togetherness. But without the presents, there's nothing to do to fill up this long, long day. So I think Christmas is about the presents, and I'm sure you agree.

If you do, I have some suggestions about ways that you could make the present part of the day last longer: using packing tape to wrap presents instead of Scotch tape(透明胶带). It took, like, ten minutes to open just one present.

My final suggestion is pretty simple: more presents! If it took the whole day to open all of the presents, then I wouldn't have that terrible time, because my mom says it's wrong to go play video games in my room, but there's nothing else to do outside of my room.

Anyway, thank you again and I look forward to seeing you next Thanksgiving. It's an iTunes gift card for you and hope you like it.

    Merry Christmas!

Once my father asked me to hold his hammer(锤子) while he was repairing something, so we could have some time to talk to each other.

For 22 years, after I left home for college, he called me every Sunday at 9 a.m. He was always interested in my life and how my family was doing, and I never once heard him complained about his own life.

Nine years ago when I bought my first house, my father, 67 years old, spent eight hours a day painting it for three days. He would not allow me to pay someone to have it done. All he asked for was a glass of iced tea and for me to hold a paint brush for him and talk to him. But I was too busy.

Five years ago, at age 71, my father spent five hours putting together a swingset (秋千组) for my daughter. Again, all he asked was that I get him a glass of iced tea and talk to him. But again, I was -too busy.

Four years ago, my father drove all the way from Denver to Topeka, with an eight-foot Colorado blue spruce (蓝叶云杉) in his trunk, so that my husband and I could have a part of Colorado growing on our land. I was preparing for a trip that weekend and couldn't spend much time with him.

Then, one day, my father telephoned me as usual, this time from my sister's home in Florida. We talked about the tree he had brought me, "Fat Albert",but that morning he called it "Fat Oscar", and he seemed to have forgotten some things. I had to get to church, so I cut the conversation short.

The call came at 4:44 p.m. that day: my father was in hospital in Florida with an aneurysm (动脉瘤). I got on a plane immediately, and on the way I thought of all the times I had not taken the time to talk to my father. I realized that I had no idea who he was or what his deepest thoughts were. I promised that when I arrived, I would make up for lost time.

I arrived in Florida at 1 a.m. My father had passed away at 9:12 p. m. This time it was he who did not have time to talk to me.
