"The direct reason for the drought (干旱) is light rain and high temperature," Ren Fuming, a leading expert (专家)at China's National Climate Center. The rainfall in worst-hit Yunnan since September last year is the lowest in about 50 years while the temperature since the beginning of winter is the highest.

All over the world, natural disasters have climbed from less than 50 a year in the 1950s to between 350 and 450 a year in the 2000s. In 2009, weather events affected 55 million people around the world. China's drought is mainly affecting key food-producing areas, which grow more than eighty percent of the country's wheat.

With no rain in sight until mid-month and possibly beyond, Chinese officials say they are preparing for a serious, long-lasting drought. The UN has warned that the drought could drive up food prices. And the situation could become terrible if a spring drought follows the winter drought. Food prices have already risen about 35 percent since mid-November.

Chinese officials say the country's food production (产量) still has room to go back, although (尽管) people suffer (遭受) from the losses.
