It's been a long holiday. Because of the virus outbreak (爆发), many of us have already stayed at home for more than a month! How did you spend your time? Have you done anything special? During this difficult period, some teenagers have come up with new and interesting things to do. They have not only shown how creative they are, but also helped to cheer up those who are feeling down. Let's see what they've been up to.

    Write a rap song

"I close my eyes and pray (祈祷)/ hoping everything will be OK/ the one who can save you is not God/ but an ordinary man in flesh and blood (血肉之躯)."

These are a few lines from a rap song written by Liu Yixin and Li Yusheng. They are Senior 3 students from The High School Affiliated to Renmin University in Beijing. Liu has read many news stories recently, both good and bad. He wanted to express (表达) his own ideas with this song. "I love making music and used to have my own band. Music is the best way for me to express myself," Liu said.

    Encourage people to dance

Matthew Lee is a 16-year-old Chinese-American. He is now living in Los Angeles, US, but still feels worried about the outbreak in China. When he learned that most Chinese are unable to leave their houses, he decided to encourage them to exercise at home. So he made a dance video with his friends and posted it online. For the cooldown part of the dance, Lee chose the songWe Are The World. As Lee said, "I believe that with sweat (汗水) and smiles, together, we will make a better day."

    Write an English poem

Ma Qichao is a junior 2 student from Baoding, Hebei. Having to stay at home during the outbreak, Ma and his classmates wrote several acrostic poems (藏头诗) in English to help cheer people up. "I found it quite interesting. You can hide a message in the first letters of each line and surprise your readers as they read downwards," Ma said. "The process (过程) of writing poems makes me feel that I'm closer to people from Wuhan." Here is part of a poem written by Ma.

Just stay on your path to guarantee (保证) our safety

Ignore other countries' criticism (批评) and make your own contributions (贡献)

All of us are on your side and we are finding new solutions

You stand out as the "heroes in harm's way" (逆行者) in this situation

Optimism can be significant (重要的) no matter what your position is

Use your strong power to overcome (战胜) this epidemic outbreak

Even though the epidemic(流行病) continues to keep you at home, you still have to study. Luckily, online learning resources and platforms (平台) are here to help. Let's see how you can better learn from home.

Kids all over the country are studying online now.

The novel coronavirus might have stopped Chinese students from going back to school. But it hasn't stopped them from learning. Many of them are now studying at home.

Most schools across China started their new semester (学期) online on Feb 17. They have moved offline (线下的) classes online. Students can have classes at home through livestreaming (直播) and recorded broadcasts (录播).

Besides school courses, students can also find many free resources (资源) online to learn by themselves at home.

On Feb 17, the Ministry of Education (MOE) made a national cloud learning platform for primary and secondary schools. The cloud platform covers all major(主要的) subjects, so 180 million students can keep learning even with schools closed. In some countryside areas, students might not have the Internet. But they can learn through their own educational TV channel (频道), according to Xinhua.

Online education companies have also offered help. Yang Zhengda is the founder (创始人) of online education startup (初创公司) vipJr. He said that the company's recorded classes are all available for free online. The company has also helped several schools build a platform called Air Classroom. It can give students learning resources and question-answering services.

Epidemic prevention and control efforts are also part of the online classes. According to the MOE's guideline (指导意见), students should learn about the novel coronavirus, as well as how to protect themselves and tell rumors (谣言) apart from facts. They can also get mental health advice online.

Have you ever eaten a whole packet of biscuits(一袋饼干), but you planned to only have one? Or have you stayed up much later than you planned, or even all night, having "just one more" try in a game? Both of these are examples of mindlessness. When we live this way, we are not fully awake and not fully living our lives.

However, when we are mindful, we are different. We are conscious(清醒的) of our thoughts, our actions and what is happening around us. We might notice a beautiful sunrise or really listen carefully to what a friend is saying, instead of planning what we're going to say next. We are also clear about our own feelings and thoughts. So, we are consciously deciding what to pay attention to(关注) and we are not worrying about the past or planning for the future.

For most people, life is getting busier and more stressful. People are often doing two or three things at the same time: sending messages while watching TV, or even looking at phones while walking.

A study shows that  ▲   . It can help you to focus to have a better memory and think more clearly. It can also help you to manage pain better and improve sleep, and it can even help you to lose weight because you won't eat that whole packet of biscuits without thinking.

A very simple skill that you can try right now is to close your eyes for a few minutes and count how many sounds you can hear. This will help you to focus on what is happening right now. Another skill is to focus on a piece of food instead of eating it without thinking, and notice how it feels and how it tastes.

Both of these skills help you to slow down and focus on the present moment. Jon Kabat Zinn says mindfulness is "Paying attention on purpose in the present moment and without judging."

Qingming, meaning "clear and bright" in Chinese, is an important traditional festival. The festival can date back to Zhou Dynasty (1046-256 BC). The words "clear" and "bright" describe the weather in this period. The day before Qingming Festival is Cold Food Day when people are not allowed to set fire and only eat cold food. As time went by, the two festivals became one. Some areas in south China still keep the custom.

The main custom of Qingming Festival is tomb sweeping, one way to pay respect to ancestors(祭祖). On that day, people clean the tombs, add some fresh earth, offer flowers, and burn candles along with paper money and some other paper things. Once tomb sweeping finishes, families have a picnic around the tomb and commonly spend the afternoon enjoying outdoor activities.

Spring hiking is also a popular custom for Chinese. It's good for health, and it's an excellent opportunity to go into nature and communicate with families and friends. In the early blooming days of spring, families climb mountains or take a walk into forests and fields, enjoying the "clear and bright" weather. In the past, Chinese called it "Xun Chun"-looking for spring.

Willows(柳树) always sprout(发芽) in spring. The old Chinese thought it was a symbol of life and people would pick willow branches, and even put them on the doors and the roofs of houses. It is said that willows can help to get off bad luck.

As an important traditional festival, Qingming Festival enjoys great culture value. On the 20th May, 2006, it was added to the World Intangible Cultural Heritage(非遗) List.

Qingming Festival is filled with contradictory emotions(矛盾的情绪). Especially for the ancient poets(诗 人), it's a day when it is easy to get sad by over missing the passed families. A number of poems about Qingming Festival have been created by them.

"A drizzling rain falls on the Mourning Day. /Pedestrians are broken-hearted on the way. /Where can a tavern be found to drown their sorrows? /There a cowboy points to a hamlet amid apricot flowers." It is the most famous poem by Du Mu.
