    Dear World:

    My son starts school today.

It's going to be strange and new to him for a while, and I wish you would treat him gently

You see, up to now, he's been king of the roost(小皇帝).

He's been leader of the backyard.

I have always been around to repair his wounds(伤口), and to comfort his feelings.

But now—things are going to be different.

This morning, he's going to walk down the front steps, say goodbye and start on his great adventure(冒险) that will probably include wars and sad stories.

To live his life in the world will need love and confidence.

So, World, I wish you would take him by his young hand and teach him the things he will have to know.

Teach him—but gently, if you can.

Teach him that for every bad man there is a hero; that for every enemy there is a friend.

Teach him the wonders of books.

Give him quiet time to watch the birds in the sky, bees in the sun, and flowers on the green hill.

Teach him it is far better to fail than to cheat(欺骗).

Teach him to believe his own ideas, even if everyone tells him they are wrong.

Teach him to close his ears to groups of shouting people…and to stand and fight if he thinks he's right.

Teach him gently World, but don't treat him too kindly, because only the test of fire makes fine steel.

This is a big order, World, but see what you can do.

He's such a nice little boy.

    "Don't tell anyone," Jennifer said. "It's a secret "

Reagan sighed(叹气). Jennifer wanted everything to be a secret. But Reagan was getting tired of keeping secrets, especially from her best friend Lena.

"Hey, guys," Lena said, walking over and sitting next to Reagan and Jennifer at the table. "What are you talking about?"

"Well—" Reagan just began to say.

"Reagan! You can't tell her," Jennifer said. "It's a secret. You can't tell other people's secrets"

"But she should know this. It's about—"

Jennifer narrowed her eyes at Reagan. "If you can't keep a secret, I'll have to find another friend who can."

"But this isn't really a secret," Reagan said.

"Anything can be a secret. It's more fun that way."

"Well, it's not fun for the people who don't know the secret." Lena got up and walked away.

Reagan stood up. "I'll keep your secret because I'm your friend," she told Jennifer, "but I don't want to know any more secrets. Don't tell me anything I can't tell Lena. She's one of my best friends, and I don't like making her feel left out." Reagan turned and walked off after Lena.

"Wait!" Jennifer said. "You can tell Lena that tryouts(选拔)for the play are being moved up to Thursday. She should know because she's going to the tryouts, too."

Reagan smiled. "Secrets are fine sometimes. But Lena's our friend. You shouldn't want to keep things from her."

"You're right," Jennifer said. "Let's go to find her and tell her about tryouts right now."
