Among all the festivals, Christmas is my favorite. Ten years has passed since that thing happened. I was only1years old at that time. It was December 24th, just the day2Christmas Day. That evening, my dad came home from work a little earlier. After supper, he said to us, "Tomorrow is Christmas Day. My kids, I think you need to3loving others." He went on, "Therefore, we are going to help out at an orphanage (孤儿院)." I couldn't believe4I heard. My heart began to sink (下沉). So we wouldn't enjoy our own Christmas dinner at home? Why so? I didn't want to spend such a holiday! The holiday without a Christmas dinner5the one I expected.

The next morning, we6early. After a quick breakfast, we set out on our long journey to the orphanage. As soon as we arrived there we started to work. We had7much to do, such as preparing for the dinner, setting the tables, and organizing the kids to come in, that we had no time to have a rest. However, all I could think about was the Christmas dinner I couldn't enjoy. How8I was! But the thoughts (想法) quickly disappeared. Over the next few hours, I watched the kids sitting around the tables and enjoying the dinner. They talked happily all the time. For some kids, this was the most delicious meal they ate that week. For9, it was an unusual Christmas dinner they would never forget. The kids were so happy. Laughter filled the orphanage.

Through this10, I have learned a lot. Although I didn't enjoy the Christmas dinner at home, I got much more pleasure. Now I am a 19-year-old college student. I will remember that Christmas Day forever.

John Smith is an exchange student from New York. Here is a letter to his friend in his hometown.

Dear David,

How time flies! It's been 3 months since I came to China. I'm having a great time on my student exchange program here. So far, I've completely got used to the life here and have known a lot about traditional Chinese culture. I'd like to share some with you.

In China, there are many different kinds of traditional art forms, such as paper cutting, Chinese clay art and so on. Among them, the kite interests me most. The first ancient Chinese kite appeared more than 2,000 years ago. Then flying kites was spread into Japan, Korea and Malaysia during the Tang Dynasty and the Song Dynasty. Kites are regarded as the earliest craft (飞行器). They played an important role in the process of inventing the plane.

Tea culture is important in China. Tea was discovered as a kind of drink by accident about 5,000 years ago. It is believed that tea was brought to Korea and Japan during the 6th and 7th centuries. It didn't appear in England until around 1660. The tea trade from China to Western countries took place in the 19th century. Now tea has become one of the most popular drinks around the world.

Lastly, I'd like to tell you something about one of the traditional Chinese festivals — the Mid-Autumn Festival. It is on the fifteenth day of the eighth month in the Chinese lunar calendar (阴历). Chinese people have been celebrating the Mid-Autumn Festival and enjoying mooncakes for centuries.

If you'd like to know more about traditional Chinese culture, I will talk about it in the next letter.

    Best wishes!

yours,

John

One day, a couple wanted to buy a tea cup. So they went into a shop. They saw a beautiful one there. They asked, "May we see that? We've never seen such a beautiful one." As the shopkeeper handed it to them, suddenly the tea cup spoke. "You don't understand." it said. "Once I was red and looked ugly. I was rolled and struck (捶打) over and over by my master. I shouted out, 'Let me alone.' But he only smiled, 'Not yet.' Then I was put on a wheel which was moving, and suddenly I was pushed to move around and around. 'Stop!' I cried. But my master only shook his head and said, 'Not yet.' Then he put me in the oven. I was fired at a very high heat. I wondered why he wanted to burn me, and I cried and knocked at the door. But he just shook his head."

"Finally, the door opened. He put me on the table, and I began to become cool. Then I was polished. After that, my master brushed and painted me all over. How terrible the smell was! I thought I would die. 'Stop!' I cried. He only shook his head, 'Not yet.' Then suddenly he put me into the second oven. This oven was twice as hot as the first one and I couldn't breathe at all. I begged (哀求). However, my master put me on the table again. 'Not yet.' I nearly lost hope. Just then, the door opened. He took me out and put me on the table again."

"One hour later he handed me a mirror and said, 'Look at yourself.' And I did so. I was surprised and said, 'That's not me. Why am I so beautiful? 'I want you to remember,' my master said, 'without those paints, you would never be a perfect product.'"
