Over thousands of years, China has produced a large number of inventions. And the four inventions namely paper, gunpowder, the compass and printing, are traditionally referred to as the Four Great Inventions in China.
The invention of paper as we know came in China around 105 AD. The inventor of paper is traditionally considered to be Cai Lun. The great thing about Cai Lun's invention was that his paper was good to write on, cheap, light and easy to carry. However, a recent evidence (证据) shows paper was in use in China two hundred years earlier.
The second great invention, printing, goes closely with paper. Building on other printing technology, Bi Sheng invented movable type printing around 1040. Before its invention, people copied down things by handwriting. Today almost everyone in the world uses printing. People can use it to print newspapers, magazines and books.
The third great Chinese invention is gunpowder. Gunpowder was invented in the Tang Dynasty. Before its invention, people couldn't do some construction like building mountain tunnels (隧道). Today soldiers use it in guns and cannons. Constructors use it to break rocks into pieces. Scientists use it in rockets as fuel.
The compass was invented in the Spring and Autumn Period. The circular centre represents Heaven, and the square plate represents Earth. The handle of the spoon points south. The spread of the compass to Europe opened the oceans of the world to travel and led to the discovery of the New World.
