Different weather makes people feel different. It influences health, intelligence (智力) and feelings.

In August, it is very hot and wet in the southern part of the United States. People there have heart trouble and other kinds of health problems during thismonth. In the Northeast and the Middle West, it is very hot at some times and very cold at other times. People in these states have more heart trouble after the weather changes in February or March.

The weather can also influence intelligence. For example, in a scientific report, IQ (智商) of a group of students was very high when a very strong wind came, but after the strong wind, their IQ was 10% below. The wind can help people have higher intelligence. Very hot weather, on the other hand (另一方面), can make it lower. Students in many schools of the United States often get worse on exams in the hot months of the year (July and August).

Weather also has a strong influence on people's feelings. Winter may be a bad time for thin people. They usually feel cold during these months. They might feel unhappy during cold weather. But fat people may have a hard time in hot summer. At about 18℃, people become stronger.

Low air pressure (气压) may make people forgetful. People leave more bags on buses and in shops on low—pressure days. There is "good weather" for health. People feel best at a temperature of about 18℃.

Are you feeling sad, tired, forgetful, or unhappy today? It may be the weather's problem.

    Nature's Warnings

When the sky suddenly turns dark and the wind is strong, watch out! A dangerous storm might be coming. Storms are scary. Watch for flashes of lightning. Listen for thunder. If nature sends these warnings, don't wait for rain.

Act right away to keep safe.

    Safety Steps

At the first flash of lightning, quickly get inside a building or a car. Do not go into a shed (棚) for protection.Itis not closed like a building, so it is not safe.

Even after you are indoors, be careful. It is not smart to go near doors and windows. A room with no windows is the safest place to be.

Do not wash your hands during a storm. Do not use anything that runs on electricity either. Water and electrical lines are like roads for lightning. Even if you really want to play computer games, don't! It is better to be bored than to risk getting hurt. Try reading a book instead. Reading is more fun than playing computer games.

If you can't get to somewhere safe, stay out in the open. You may feel safe under a tree, but that is not a good place to be. Lightning is pulling toward tall poles and trees. Stay down in an open space and cover your ears to protect them. Loud thunder can damage your hearing.

    Lightning Strikes

Lightning does not strike people very often. It is not likely that you will ever see that happen. If you do, call 1-2-0. Only trained emergency workers should care for a person who has been hit by lightning.

If you follow these rules, you can stay safe during a storm.

Most of us think the telephone was invented by Alexander Graham Bell. In fact, an Italian named Antonio Meucci was officially recognised (认定) as the inventor a few years ago. Who is Meucci and why wasn't he known for his invention at the time?

Antonio Meucci was born in Italy in 1808. He studied engineering and drawing. During his studies, Meucci started to experiment with electricity. When two places were connected with wire, people in those places could hear each other talk.

In 1850, Meucci and his wife, Esterre, moved to New York. Meucci was worried about his wife, because she had become very ill. To solve this problem, he connected metal cables between his home and his workshop. This way, they could talk to each other conveniently.

Meucci invited a group of people to see his new invention. They listened in amazement as the voice of a singer was heard through the wires.

Even worse, Meucci never applied for a patent (专利) on his invention. Meanwhile, Alexander Graham Bell was working on the same idea and in 1876 the patent for the telephone was given to him.

In 2002, more than a century after Meucci's death, his work was finally recognised by the government.

A. He discovered that sound could travel through metal cables.

B. However, he wasn't the first person to think of the idea.

C. Unfortunately, only a few people attended this talk.

D. He will now be known all over the world as the telephone's inventor.

E. He needed to keep in touch with her at all times.
