One night before bed, Christine Carter was sitting with her daughter in her bedroom. They were making a list:" Three Good Things of the Day". Her daughter said, "Mom, chatting with you is one of my three good things." Making a list was their way to think of things they were1for. It's a skill in the research of happiness.

Carter is a professor at the University of California. She studies how schools and families build up positive attitudes and help kids lead2lives. This has become especially important during the coronavirus pandemic (新冠病毒引发的流行病). Many kids have missed important events. Some even have lost people in their lives.

Finding the positive things sometimes doesn't mean people won't be sad any more. You'll find it natural to feel sad, but it passes more3 if we notice the good things in life. "This is really about mental health," Carter says. "We can practise bringing happiness to ourselves. It's like putting money in the bank. We can deal with hard times in the future."

Expressing thanks is also important. Carter says, "Let's say you often argue with a brother or a sister. Think about whether they did something good for you or with you. Remember the good times. This makes it likely you'll4better tomorrow."

A key step toward happiness is learning how to describe emotions, even negative ones. It's better to face your emotions than to5them. Ask yourself: "How do I feel? Where in my body am I feeling it? Does it have a color or a shape?"

The surest way to happiness is6." Helping others gives life purpose because you are changing the world." Carter says," Besides, people have a sense of connection and satisfaction. We are comfortable when we're connected with other people."

Answer the questions.

Many people like to go diving (潜水) when they are on holiday. Jenney, a 14-year-old girl, is getting ready to have a special dive with sharks in the sea of Florida. It's really expensive for her to do it. Sounds crazy?

Shark diving is big business in some places and that's raising a question about how close people should get to them. Some brave divers think it is no problem for them to get close to sharks. Divers in Florida, for example, often have fun with lemon sharks, which have attacked people a few times before. On the other side, many people are against shark diving. They think no one should go diving with sharks. And it is   foolish to feed sharks while diving and bring them close to busy beaches.

Bob Dimond has been a diver for 30 years. He's worried that sharks may lose their fear of humans." The reason why people feed sharks is to attract them, but people don't want to be sharks' food. However, when sharks learn to connect humans with food, they approach to see if they can find something to eat, Bob says." That's reason enough to stay away from sharks."

Bob has created the Marine (海洋的) Safety Group. He and his friends believe if people feed a wild animal, they will increase the chance to be attacked. Therefore, their goal is to stop all shark feeding. In fact, shark feeding has never been directly associated with an attack on a human. When a shark strikes, it is usually" hit and run". It bites and then quickly releases the person and disappears.

Obviously, sharks make shark diving so attractive. For divers such as Jenney, diving with sharks is a once-in-a-life experience. Jenney says," I actually had a chance to lie down on the bottom of the ocean and the sharks were right in front of me. And I could see their mouths and their eyes and feed them. I used to know only a little about sharks, but now I want more teenagers to join me."
