I went home one Saturday afternoon in the autumn of 1993 to get some work done in the garden. While sweeping leaves on the ground, my five-year-old son Nick came over and asked me to write something on a piece of paper to make a sign for him.

    "What for?" I asked.

    "I'm going to sell some of my stones," he answered.

    Nickwas fascinated withstones and had collected many stones from all over. "I'm too busy to do that for you. Go and ask your mum for help," I said.

    At East China University of Science and Technology, students will get a coupon（优惠券） if they eat up their food. Students can collect coupons and exchange them for small gifts, such as books, magazines, mobile phone covers and hand warmers.

    The measure is part of a national 'eat—up' campaign(运动) which is organized by students to deal with food waste on campuses.

    Why only on campuses, you might ask. Because according to a report by Xinhua News Agency, students waste twice as much food as the national average.

    The aim of the campaign is not only to encourage students to finish their food. We hope it can also encourage students to choose a more environment–friendly and healthy lifestyle,” said Tao Siliang, secretary(秘书) of the Youth League Committee at Shanghai University.

    But some school food is poorly prepared, so students do not like to finish it all. Some schools have taken notice of this and they are taking measures to improve it.

    One afternoon, four black youths walked into a restaurant that served “whites” only. They sat down and ordered bread and milk. The white waiter just said “We don't serve blacks”. The young men did not move. They were tired to death of segregation（种族分离） and of being kicked around. The manager was called.     The next day, more young black people came, and even more came the day after to the restaurant. Then a gang of white youths came in and attacked them.
