Everybody knows that Earth spins from west to east. That is to say, it appears to be turning counterclockwise (逆时针) rapidly when viewed from above the North Pole. But what if Earth started spinning the other way?

Scientists from Germany have made a computer simulation in which Earth spins in the opposite direction — clockwise when viewed from above the North Pole. This showed them some interesting things about the weather and geography on Earth, Live Science reported.

As Earth spins in a counterclockwise direction, it shapes certain ocean currents (洋流). The direction of ocean currents, together with winds, produces different weathers around the globe. But a backward spin changes the ocean currents and winds.     Western areas of the lands on Earth cool down as the eastern parts warm up. Winters become even colder in northwestern

Europe, while eastern Russia becomes warmer than before. Rain no longer falls on the planet's wettest places.

Another result of a backward spin is that Earth becomes greener. Scientists found that global desert (沙漠) areas reduce from 42 million square kilometers to 3l million square kilometers. This may have something to do with the changing weather. Therefore, you can see rich green landscapes from Central Africa to the Middle East, which are mostly covered with deserts now. More surprisingly, the Sahara Desert becomes anoasis.

However, deserts don't disappear. They just appear in some places in which they never appeared before. Deserts would cover North America, where countries like the United States and Canada lie. Sand dunes would replace the Amazon rainforest in South America.

A backward spin would keep the main features (特征) of Earth's geography, such as the size, shapes and positions of lands and oceans. But it would change the interactions between circulating air, ocean and geography, lead scientist Florian Ziemen told Live Science.

It was one o'clock in the morning when I at last succeeded in creating a life. As I looked at the lifeless human being, I saw one eye slowly open. Then he began to breathe and move his arms. At first, I thought he would be a fine-looking man. He had yellow skin, black hair and very white teeth. Unluckily, his eyes were watery, and his lips were thin and colorless. I soon realized that there was nothing beautiful about him. I ran out of the room, disgusted (恶心) by the creature I had created. I tried to sleep, but for hours I could not. Then, when I did get to sleep, I had bad dreams. When I awoke the next morning, I did not want to return to my laboratory and the monster I had created. I went for a long walk until I came to an inn. There, to my pleasure and surprise, I found my friend, Henry Clerval. "Tell me about my family," I asked him. "And Elizabeth, how is she?"

"They are all well, Frankenstein." he said. "But you do not look well, my friend. Your eyes look as if you have not slept for many weeks."

I knew this was true. "I have been so busy," I explained, "that I have been working without rest." Henry walked back with me to my department. I did not want him to, but I could not stop him. I was afraid that the creature I had left there might be alive and walking about. When we reached my apartment, I asked Henry to wait outside for a few minutes. I did not explain why. I slowly opened the door and entered the room. To my surprise, it was empty. The creature had gone. I was so overcome by the feeling that I fainted. I was ill for many months.

During my illness, Henry was my only nurse. He heard me talking in my sleep about a monster. At first, he thought I was just having a bad dream, but then he realized that something very bad happened in my life.

In the eyes of five-year-old Youyou, his mother is like Ultraman, a superhero in a cartoon series, who is fighting bad guys every day.

His mother, Lu Jingjing, a doctor at Wuhan Children's Hospital, is now working at the mobile cabin hospital at the Wuhan International Conference & Exhibition Center, taking care of novel coronavirus- infected (新冠病毒感染的) patients.

Since Lu left home for the cabin hospital on Feb. 4, Youyou has kept asking his mother through video chat: "Mom, how many viruses (病毒) did you beat today?"

The mother of Youyou and a one-year-old daughter, Lu was sent to do support work at a community quarantine (隔离) center on Feb. 2 and then to the cabin hospital two days later.

While she was packing to leave for the cabin hospital from home, Youyou cried and tried to stop Lu from leaving, knowing he would not see his mother for a long time. Lu patiently explained to him what the virus is, and told him that she would fight the virus with the cartoon superhero, Ultraman.

"He then calmed down and let me go because in his mind, Ultraman is the strongest in the battlefield and could definitely help me win," Lu said. Since then, her son keeps asking through video chat how many viruses Lu has killed every day and helps her add them up.

"He may not know clearly about why I'm away from home, ___________," she said, "He told me that he had planted a cherry tree and would reward me with cherries when I get back. Every time he said Mom, I miss you', I couldn't stop bursting into tears."

The Sixth Time I Went to the Principal's Office When I was in the seventh grade, I had problems behaving. My heart was in the right place, but I couldn't always follow the rules. I played many tricks on my schoolmates. Once, I even pulled a girl's hair on the school bus to get her attention. As a result, I was repeatedly sent to the office of the principal(校长).

Although I hated going there, I did not hate the principal, Mr. Ratcliff. Mr. Ratcliff was a kind, elderly man. When he spanked(打屁股)me for putting some ants into a classmate's pencil box, it didn't hurt at all, but it did hurt my feelings. I thought so much of him and moments like that seemed to prove I was hopelessly bad.

When I got called to Mr. Ratcliff's office for the sixth time, I had no idea what I had done. I felt disappointed as I walked down there. I went into his office, sat down, and looked at the floor. Then he said the last thing I expected to hear:"

Kevin, I've heard you've been behaving really well lately. I want you to know how proud I am of you, and I just called you down to my office to give you a peppermint."

    "Really?" I was surprised.

"Yes. Now you can take that peppermint and go back to class."

I carried the peppermint with me as if it was a gold coin. When I got into my classroom, I bragged(吹嘘)to my classmates about my turnaround, excitedly. I wasn't so bad after all.

Mr. Ratcliff was really kind. He made me realize that I was just a kid who had problems with behavior. He bought some peppermints and took the time to notice me when I got something-anything-right. Mr. Ratcliff gave me some hope by giving me some love. I will just remember him for the rest of my life.
