It was a cold November morning several years ago. My alarm clock had just gone off, but I was having trouble getting out of bed. My dad had died a few weeks before. I felt weighed down by sadness and depression.

Tough(结实的)and strong, my dad had worked so hard all of his life to support us. He had a temper and would sometimes shout at my brothers and me, but I always knew that he loved me. Still, he had been raised in a traditional way and raised us that way too. I couldn't remember, for example, ever being hugged by him.

But eventually, my mom and grandma passed away. My dad moved into grandma's home right up the road from where I lived. I was so happy to have him close by. I would often visit him and just talk with him about life. But we still rarely touched and never hugged. Finally, his own health began to rapidly fail and within a few months he left us. It was a cold morning when we had his service, but I was too cold and numb(麻木的) inside myself to feel it. I couldn't remember when we'd had our last hug.

I sighed and got out of my bed. I turned on the lights and walked into the hallway. It was my son Tony walking down the hall to meet me. Suddenly, he opened his arms and gave me a heartfelt hug. And just as he did, I heard my dad's voice deep inside of me say, "Joey, this hug is from me!" I cried and smiled at the same time. At that moment, in the place where heart, mind, and spirit all meet, I felt loved. I felt loved by my dad. I felt loved by life.

In the 1950s, car culture spread across the US. With the rise of the country's economy, nearly every family could afford a car. This led people to create new businesses that depended on carsgas stations, auto shops, and some drive in res

These restaurants didn't have an indoor seating. You would drive your car to an outdoor "booth"—a parking spot with a menu displayed(展示) next to it. A waitress would come over (usually on roller skates) and take your order. She would then bring you your food and you would eat it in your car.

Eating in your car is seen as something to be done only when you're in a hurry these days. But back then, it was a new experience. Sitting in your brand-new vehicle, drinking delicious milkshakes and eating burgers became a trend(趋势). Like all trends, it died out eventually-most driveins have been replaced by drive-thrus (汽车餐厅).

You already know two of the biggest drive-thru restaurant chains—McDonald's and KFC. They became popular as the pace of modern life increased in the 1970s and 1980s. They're not known for the experience that driveins once offered. They offer pure speed and convenience, especially for parents and other busy people.

I myself remember eating McDonald's for lunch in the back seat of my mom's car as we ran errands(办事)on the weekend. Though the convenience of drive-thrus is nice, I do wish I could have experienced the drive-in restaurants in the past.

The moon, the key part of the festival, is special to most Chinese people. We enjoy and admire it.

Our admiration of the moon dates back to ancient times. There is the legend of Chang'e flying to the moon-the most famous story about the moon. Many Chinese poets connect the moon with homesickness. For example, from Jing Ye Si(Thoughts in the Silent Night) by Tang dynasty poet Li Bai.

Today, the moon is still important to Chinese people. The Miao minority(少数民族) in Guizhou province has a special custom.

However, Western people see the moon differently. The most wellknown legend is the werewolf(狼人). A werewolf usually looks like a human, but changes into a wolf-like creature when there is a full moon. Also, if someone is very excited or even crazy about something, others may joke, "It must be a full moon."
