Many years ago, when I was fresh out of school and working in Denver, I was driving to my parents' home in Missouri to spend Christmas with them. I stopped halfway at a 1to refill my tank. While I was standing in line at the cash register (收款台), I said hello to an old couple who were also 2 gas.

I started my car, but had gone only a few miles when black smoke 3from the back of my car. I stopped and4what I should do. A car slowed down behind me. It was the couple I had spoken to at the gas station. They said they 5 take me to my parents' home. We chatted on the way into the city. Before leaving, I asked the husband 6their address and he gave me his business card.

Before Christmas, I wrote to the couple asking if I could thank them 7 . Soon, I received a Christmas present with a note from them. They 8refused my request. They just said helping me had made their holiday 9.

Years later, after finishing a one-day meeting in New York, I returned to my car, only to find that I'd left the lights 10all day, and the battery (电池) was dead. Then I noticed that the Friendly Ford Dealership —— a shop11 cars —— was right next door. I walked over and found two salesmen in the showroom.

"Just how friendly is Friendly Ford?" I asked and told them about my12. They quickly drove a pickup truck to my car and started it. They would accept no pay, 13 I wrote them a note to say thanks after returning home. Soon, I got a letter from one of them. 14had ever taken the time to write to him to say “thank you”, he said, and they were two 15words but meant so much.

In this life, what did you miss?

The wife asked the husband when she was 25. The husband worriedly replied, “I missed a good job.” When she was 35, the husband angrily told her that he had just missed the bus. At 45, the husband sadly said, “I missed the last momentsaying goodbye to my grandfatherbefore his last breath.” At 55, the husband said disappointingly, “I missed a good chance to retire (退休). At 65, the husband hurriedly replied, “I missed the time for a dentist.”

At 75, the wife did not ask the husband anymore. The husband was in front of the very sick wife with his knees down. Remembering the question the wife used to ask him, this time he asked the wife the same question. The wife, with a smile and peaceful look, replied, “In this life, I did not miss having you!”

The husband was full of tears. He always thought that they could be together forever. He was always busy with work and personal things. So much so he had never thought about her. The husband hugged the wife and said, “Over 50 years, how I had allowed myself to be so blind to your love and care for me.”

In the busy life, so many people fill all their lives with their jobs. These people spend all their time and health meeting the social expectations. They never spare time on health care. They miss the chances to be with their children in their growing up. They pay no attention to the loved ones who care for them, and also their health.

Nobody knows what is going to happen one year from now. Life is not long, so always live in the now. Express your thanks to your loved ones in words. Show your care with actions. Treat each day as the last day of life. In this way, when you are gone, you loved ones would have nothing to feel sorry about.

A businessman's son wanted to learn the secret of happiness from the wisest man. The boy walked through the desert for forty days until he reached a beautiful castle at the top of a mountain where the wise man lived.

When he entered a room, the boy was so surprised: businessmen coming and going, people chatting in the corners, a small band playing sweet music, and all kinds of delicious dishes on a large table.

The wise man talked with everyone. The boy had to wait for two hours until it was his turn.

With enough patience, the wise man listened to the reason for the boy's visit, but he was too busy to explain to him the secret of happiness. He suggested that the boy take a walk around his palace and come back in two hours.

“However,"he added, handing the boy a teaspoon with two drops of oil in it, “while you walk, carry this spoon and don't let the oil go out.”

The boy thought he must follow what the old man had said, so he always kept his eyes fixed on the spoon while walking. At last he returned to the wise man.

“So,”asked the wise man,“did you see the famous paintings in the hall? Did you see the garden that took the master gardener ten years to create?” Embarrassed, the boy said that he had noticed nothing. All his attention was on the spoon.

“OK. Now go back and see the wonders of my world,” said the man. Now more relaxed, the boy took the spoon and walked again through the palace. After his return, he exactly reported all that he had seen.

“But where is the oil?”asked the wise man. Looking down at the spoon, the boy realized that he had spilled (溅) it all.

“Well, the secret of happiness lies in ___________________.”the wise man said with a smile. Then the boy realized what happiness was.

There have always been a lot of commonly believed but wrong ideas about being fat and doing exercise. Some people believe they can't help putting on weight as they get older, while others believe that if they stop exercising, their muscles will turn into fat. Here are some more:

I'll never lose weight — I come from a fat family

Wrong! It is true that fatness runs in families and genes (基因) might play a role in it. However, the main reason is that they share the same habits of eating too much and exercise too little.

I am fat because I burn calories(热量) slowly

Wrong! Fatness is not caused by a slow metabolism (新陈代谢). If fact, although fat people burn more calories that thin people, they fail to realize how much they eat! Keeping a diary on diet can help you find out how many calories you take in every day.

Exercise is boring

Wrong! Anything will become boring if you do it again and again. The key is to develop a balanced (平衡的) program of different kinds that's fun as well as helpful. If you enjoy a Sunday walk, choose a different road. If you do Yoga, try a tai chi class. If you like swimming, set yourself a distance or time challenge.

No pain, no gain

Wrong! Exercise is not meant to hurt. Yes, pain is your body telling you something's wrong, and continuing to exercise could lead to serious injury. You may feel a little uncomfortable as you begin to exercise regularly, but this is your body getting used to the positive changes in your lifestyle and the pains should be gone very quickly. If you don't, rest and look for medical advice.
