The San, who is also called ‘bush people', is the last people living in the Kalahari. They eat wild animals, plants, berries, nuts and insects. Their lifestyle is very simple,   ▲  . They use bows and arrows for hunting. They get their water from plants because they live in the southern Africa's hottest places and there is often no water.

They even get medicine from plants when they are ill.

The San people live in small groups of 25-50. There are no schools for children. They learn from the older people in the group. There are lots of things they have to learn so that they can live in a dangerous place like the Kalahari. In the evenings, the groups of people often sit around a fire and tell stories. Many of the stories are about animals and how to hunt them.

The Kalahari is a big area of bushland in southern Africa. It has two parts. There is less rain in south parts. It is drier and it's a lot more difficult for people to live. But when it rains at the end of the summer, the land becomes greener and more beautiful. For a few weeks, there are millions of little flowers and even butterflies! But soon, the grass and the bushes get dry and turn brown. Then life becomes more difficult again for people and animals.

Every year, thousands of tourists from all over the world visit the Kalahari. They love driving around the bushland to watch the wild animals. Their guides are often San bushmen and the tourists love listening to their stories about the wonders of the Kalahari. The tourists stay in small huts called ‘lodges'. They have comfortable beds and showers, but there is no electricity. When they go out of their hut, they have to be very careful. Sometimes there are lions or leopards around!

Chinese sportspersons did a great job at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, winning 88 medals in total. But did you know the cool technologies - even space technologies - behind their success?

Quan Hongchan won the gold in diving. This 14-year-old new star said an AI training system helped her train. Baidu developed the system to record a diver's bodyposture (姿势). A diver lasts less than two seconds before getting into water from the diving board. But the AI can catch much important information, such as the diver's starting height, entry speed and so on. The information is sent to coaches right away.

Before setting out for Tokyo, some Chinese players visitedthe China Academy of Aerospace Aerodymamics (中国航天空气动力技术研究院). The technologies there are normally used to develop rockets. But they can also help rowers, swimmers and cyclists.

"For example, rowers in the women's national team came to my lab and used a wind tunnel to do experiments," said Jia Yi from the academy. The tunnel can make winds with different speeds. They controlled the airdrag (阻力) on their bodies. It helped them change their movements in order to behave better at the games.

But there's even more. The national table tennis team has a popular coach called Pongbot. It's a robot that can make difficult shots and never gets tired. Su Bingtian, the first Chinese sprinter (a person who takes part in short, fast races) to reach the Olympic 100-meter final, uses high-speed cameras to record his training. "The use of technology will help improve the nation's overall competitiveness in sports," said Huang Haiyan, a professor at the Shanghai University of Sport.

Tim hated waiting. There were very few things that Tim liked less than waiting.

It was a Sunday afternoon. Tim sat at the waiting room in an auto shop. His mother was having her car fixed.

Tim had already checked thevending machines(自动贩卖机). He often put his fingers into the coin returns of vending machines. Some people forgot to collect their change, so he often found some coins. That would be nice. But this time he found nothing.

After that, he played with the drinking fountain and examined the coffee pot, which was empty. Sugar packets were fun to play with for about five seconds, but then his mom told him to stop. So he put down the blue and white packets and went back to sit.

He then tried to see if he could rock the chair back and forth. It was hard to do because the chair had such strong legs. It was a nice chair, but that didn't mean it might not have loose screws (螺丝).

He checked each screw but all of them were tight.

Sighing, Tim wondered what else he could do to waste time.

The TV was on, but it was on a news channel, speaking of boring things that adults liked to know about. Mom wouldn't let him climb the counter to get up to the TV to change the channels, either.

Then Tim saw several magazines. He decided to pick up one. It had a lot about popular stars but he didn't care about that stuff. He finally found one on science and animals. It was really interesting. The pictures were colorful. In fact he was so into it that his mother had to shake him to let him know the car was done.

"See?" she said. "Waiting doesn't have to be boring. You just have to keep yourself busy doing something. I've also read some chapters."

Tim nodded and smiled. His head was still full of the pictures he'd seen.

A material is what something is made of. There are 5 basic materials. Most things are made with these materials.

Let's talk about metal first. Metal is heavy. And it is very hard and strong. It usually feels cool if you touch it. We use metal to make lots of things. We use it for forks and knives. We use it for keys. We use it for cars. We use it for these things because it is very strong.

Next, let's talk about glass. Glass is very smooth. It also feels cool to touch. It is not as heavy as metal. It is hard. But it is not strong. It breaks very easily! Then why do we use it? We use it because it is clear! You can see through glass! That's why we use it for windows and glasses.

Now, let's talk about wood. Wood is lighter than metal and glass. It is not as strong as metal. But it is much stronger than glass. We use wood to make lots of things. Things made from wood are usually light and hard and strong such as chairs and tables. Pencils are made from wood.

Now let's talk about cloth. Cloth is very light. It is much lighter than wood. And it is very soft. We use cloth to make lots of things. For example, it is used to make clothing and blankets.

Last, let's talk about plastic. Plastic is also very light. But it is different from cloth. Sometimes it is soft, and sometimes it is hard. Plastic can be used to make thin plastic bags.
