A hobby can be almost anything that a person likes to do in his free time. Hobbyists keep pets, build model ships, watch birds, climb mountains, and grow flowers. Hobbyists also paint pictures, go to concerts, play and perform on musical instruments. They collect everything from books to butterflies and from coins to stamps.

People have hobbies because these activities offer enjoyment, friendship, knowledge and relaxation. Sometimes they even make some money by following a hobby. Hobbies help people relax after hard work, and provide a balance between work and play. Hobbies also offer more interesting activities for persons who have retired. Anyone, rich or poor, old or young, sick or well, can follow an interesting hobby.

Hobbies can also help to keep a person's mental and physical health. Doctors have found that hobbies are helpful for sick people to get better from physical or mental illness. Hobbies give them something to do, and offer interests that keep them from thinking about themselves.

In early years, most people were too busy making a living to have many hobbies. But some persons who were free did enjoy hobbies.

People today have more time for hobbies than before. Machines have reduced the time that they must spend on their jobs. More people are retiring at an earlier age than before. Those who have developed hobbies never need to worry about what to do with their free hours.

Sir William Osler, a famous Canadian doctor says, "No man is really happy or safe without a hobby."

Mr. Wu is an English teacher. Last Monday at the beginning of class, he cheerfully asked his students how their weekends had been. One girl said that she had spent a terrible weekend—she had one of her teeth pulled out and it still hurt. "Why do you always seem to be so happy, Mr. Wu?" she asked.

The girl's question made Mr. Wu think of something he had read somewhere before. "Every morning when you get up, you have a choice about how you want to get close to life that day," Mr Wu said with a smile, "I choose to be cheerful."

And today is my lucky day," he added.

"Why?" The whole class were curious.

"This morning, I rode to school as usual. I only had to go another kilometer down the road when my e-bike broke down."

"Your e-bike broke down and it's your lucky day?" The students were surprised. "What do you mean, Mr. Wu?"

"My e-bike broke down fifteen minutes before class, so I left it on the roadside, took my books, and walked down the road. It took me ten minutes to arrive at school. I live eight kilometres away. My e-bike could have broken down somewhere along the way. But it didn't. Luckily, it broke down in the perfect place-off the main road, within walking distance of here. I'm still able to teach my class and I'll be able to get it repaired after class."

The students' eyes opened wide, and then they smiled. Mr. Wu smiled back and said, "Your luck depends on yourselves. It's an attitude towards life, so try to be positive every day." Somehow, his story touched them. He was happy that they had a perfect chance to think about what luck is in a new way.
