Many years ago, the Pandetti family lived in the mountains. Grandpa Pandetti traveled into the village to trade his goods.

While he was there, he looked for a special gift for his family. After a long search, he found a lovely mirror. Grandpa Pandetti bought the mirror and hurried home to his family.

It was late when Grandpa arrived home. He hung the mirror on the wall and then fell asleep quickly. Early in the morning, little Paul Pandetti woke up. As he walked into the room, he saw a young boy looking back at him. "Papa, Papa, someone has broken into our house. " Paul cried. Papa hurried down. He quickly looked at the mirror and saw a strong man looking back at him. He stared at the man. The man stared back soon. He hit the table hard and watched as the man hit hard on the table, too.

Mama Pandetti came into the room. She stopped in her way when she saw a young woman looking at her. Mama Pandetti smiled and waved at the woman. The woman also smiled and waved back at Mama.

Papa watched her with curiosity (好奇心) and then stepped up to the mirror with a smile. The strong man appeared once again in the mirror, but this time he wore a smile on his face.

From that day on, the Pandetti family smiled as they walked through the room. They were always greeted by a smile in return.

Sam knew Rosa from Adventure Club. He knew he would enjoy Rosa's party, but he didn't want to go without a gift. What could he possibly buy her with the little bit of money he had? Sam knew he couldn't ask Mom or Dad for any money—not this week!

Later that afternoon, Sam noticed a second-hand book sale going on. He went there and had a quick look. Two books caught his eye, The first was a cookbook of Puerto Rican foods, and the second was a book about women explorers. "Rosa would like these," Sam thought, "but would it be ashamed to give her second-hand books for her birthday?"

Sam decided that a second-hand gift was better than no gift at all. Besides, Rosa supported recycling in a big way. So, she would probably like it. With his last dollar, Sam bought the books and went home. He felt a little better.

The party was on Saturday. Rosa opened all her gifts and thanked everyone for the nice things they had given her. She paused when she opened Sam's gift, which made him wonder if she liked the books, but nothing was said.

When Sam got home, he opened his e-mail and found this note from Rosa.

Dear Sam,

Of all the gifts I received today, yours was the nicest. How did you know I would love a book about women explorers and a cookbook of Puerto Rican foods? Now I have something to read that will inspire me to follow my dream of becoming an adventurer, and I have a book that I can share with my grandmother. She is getting older and wants to be sure her granddaughter knows how to make the -wonderful foods of Puerto Rico. Thank you so much.

On the other hand, when you are trying to control your feelings, you wish they could be more caring and patient-- sometimes they forget that growing up is a hard ride. It can be difficult when your parents treat you like a child but expect you to act like an adult. All of this can lead to a breakdown in your relationship.

When you disagree with your parents, take a minute to calm down and try to understand the situation from their point of view. Perhaps they have experienced something similar and do not want you to go through the same pain. Through this kind of healthy discussion, you will learn when to back down and when to ask your parents to relax their control.
