The key to success

Once, when was young boy, boasted(吹嘘)that determined(下决心)to win first place at the coming 1 competition, yet I knew this goal was nearly impossible. Every year, the best players from all over the state took part in this competition. It was a huge deal, especially for a beginner like me.

But my mom was my number one 2. Every day after school, she would sit down right next to me while Miss Green was giving me piano lessons or I was 3 my piano piece. When I couldn't and wouldn't play any longer, she would always say, "If you determine to win, then act like it. Don't give up." After every practice, my whole body was in pain for numb(麻木的)fingers and stiff(僵硬的)back. However, didn't want to 4 my mom, so I kept on practising until I finally fell asleep on the piano keys.

Finally, the big day arrived. Right before my turn to perform, my mom said, "I know you want to win, so listen to me: Be there for the 5 not for the success, okay?" I managed to nod.

When I walked onto the stage, I was afraid that the judges would hear the beating of my heart instead of the music. Carefully, I took a seat before the piano and began to play. Slowly, began to 6 the world around me I just let myself fall deeper and deeper into the music.

7, really won first place. The experience made me realise that determination is not just saying that you will win; when you have solved difficulties and kept 8, you can truly say you're determined. As my mom always said, "It's hard to beat the person who is the best, but it is harder to beat the person who never gives up.

Speaking from Experience

Ryan Fila's number one goal is to make the world a better place. He has managed to put his words into action showing those around him that anything is possible if you put your mind to it.

As the son of working parents, Fila had to make the most of every opportunity no matter how small.

"I remember there was a small basketball hoop near where I lived. It looked like it was from the 1940s and there was no net." He remembered. But that was Fila's introduction to sports and played an important role in his life.

Fila played high school football in Sedalia, Colo. In order to prove his talent, Fila went to West Hills Community College in Fresno, Calif, where he played football for two years. A serious leg injury(伤害)in his second season seemingly prevented his plans of playing at a four-year college, but there was another college that was taken by Fila's ability and offered him a chance to play two more years.

Fila got a starting position on the Beaver football team as a wide receiver and played in all 22 games of the 2016 and 2017 seasons. It's Fila's achievements that set him apart from the traditional student players.

There're so many ways to get educated. There's education from life experience, school and social interaction. In addition to excelling(胜过)in the classroom and on the field, Fila started his own You Tube channel(频道), Motion Impact. It is through his channel that he produces motivational videos and offers them up to the viewing public.

He would like to think those experiences will help with his biggest goal that he wants to make a difference to the world. On March 6th, 2017, Fila presented "College: My Story, Your Story" on how to make full use of the college experience.

阅读短文,根据短文内容回答问题。

It was cold night in Washington, D. C., and was heading back to the hotel when a man came to me. He asked if I would give him some money so he could get something to eat. I'd read the signs: "Don't give money to panhandlers(乞丐).So shook my head and kept walking.

I wasn't prepared for a reply, but he said, "I am really homeless and I am really hungry! You can come with me and watch me eat!" But I kept on walking.

I couldn't forget what happened to me that day for the rest of the week. I had money in my pocket and it wouldn't have killed me to hand over a dollar or two even if he had been lying. On a very cold night, no less, I thought the worst of a fellow human being. Flying back to Anchorage, I still couldn't help thinking of him.

I was the writer of weekly garden column(专栏)at The Anchorage Daily News. One day, out of the blue, I came up with an idea. Bean's Cafe, the soup kitchen in Anchorage, feeds hundreds of hungry people every day. Why not try to get all my readers to plant one row in their gardens for Bean's? Plant a row and take it down to Bean's. Clean and simple.

We didn't keep records back then, but the idea began to take off. People would call me when they took something in. Those who only grew flowers gave them away. Food for the spirit.

In 1995, the Garden Writers Association of America(GWAA)held their meeting in Anchorage and after learning of Anchorage's program, Plant a Row for Bean's became Plant a Row for the Hungry. The idea was to have every member of the Garden Writers Association of America write or talk about planting a row for the hungry.

As more and more people started working with the program, many companies gave free seed to customers and had the logo(商标)seen in public.

Garden editor Joan Jackson raised more than 30,000 pounds of fruits and vegetables in her first year, and showed the public how the program could really work. Texas fruit farms gave away food to their local food bank after hearing about Plant a Row. Today the program continues to grow.

I am shocked that millions of Americans are threatened by hunger. If every gardener in America-and we're seventy million strong-plants one row for the hungry, we can make a difference in the number of neighbours who don't have enough to eat. Maybe then I will stop feeling guilty(愧疚)about walking past a hungry man I could have helped.
