All people will meet with mountains in their lives.

When I was a little girl, my parents moved us to the small village in a town. This town was built at the foot of a big mountain.

One day after school, while exploring the green woods of this mountain, I saw some stairs. What could these steps lead to? Could this be the way to the top?

With these questions, I started climbing up those mysterious steps.

I climbed and climbed, but still there was nothing in sight. It was getting dark, and I wasn't even close to the top.

I decided to hurry back home and try again the next day. I didn't tell anyone about what I found that night. I went to bed dreaming about what I would find at the top of this magical mountain we lived on. Could there be a handsome prince, treasure or monsters up there?

Ah . . . such childhood fantasies(幻想)! Those were the days when we dared(敢)to dream. We dared to do crazy things. We believed! I'm all grown up now, and life has shown me a beating at times.

I did live on a mountain in a town as described, but I created this childhood fantasy to make my days so much more fun as a kid. This story is like life today.

You might ask, "What was at the top of that mountain?" I ask you, "What would you have wanted to find?"

Dream about what's at the top of your mountain. What do you want out of life?

Tomorrow is another day, and still, you must climb. Whatever you do, never give up on your dream! Never let anyone tell you, "You can't."

Hello, I'm Rob. Welcome to our programme. Today we're talking about high-speed train travel. Many countries have very fast trains that transport people from city to city in super-quick time. Yes, high-speed train travel is becoming popular. Well, we'll be finding out why the UK is hoping to do something that is already popular by building a new high-speed rail line.

We know that high-speed train travel has many good things. It helps to take traffic off the road, it causes less pollution, it can move lots of people and it's quick. Yes, speed is important. Now, the TGV train in France takes about three hours to travel over 750 kilometres from Paris to Marseille in the south - very impressive.

But the UK has been slow to build high-speed rail lines. It has one from London to Paris, but the Transport Secretary, Patrick McLoughlin, thinks one line is not good enough. People can go from London to Paris on high-speed trains, but can't go from London to Birmingham. That means you can get to Paris by train more quickly than you can travel to many British cities. The government wants to build another one — called HS2 — connecting London to the middle and north of England.

But not everyone agrees to the plan and there is much discussion. Some say it will be very expensive to build, although some experts(专家)say for every 1 pound spent, it will bring 2 pounds back. There are also worries that some of the countrysides will be destroyed. It could be a long time before a final decision is made. So now we'll just have to accept that our trains in the UK will carry on at an unhurried speed while we watch with envy as another country's high-speed train passes us by!

Thank you. We hope you've enjoyed today's programme.

Captain Nemo took me to the dining room. We sat at a table in the middle of the room and ate a delicious lunch. He told me that all the food came from the sea. "I love the sea," he said. "It gives me everything that I need. Even my clothes come from the sea. It is a place of perfect peace. There are no governments, no taxes, and no wars. Here, I am truly free! I will never return to the land. "He took me to see the library which had thousands of books in many languages. Then he showed me the art gallery. It had many paintings by famous artists. The next room was a museum with all kinds of treasures from the sea. I had never seen such a good museum.

Captain Nemo was very proud of his collection and very proud of the Nautilus(鹦鹉螺号). He told me that he had discovered a way to make electricity(电) using salt and mercury(水银). This electricity gave the Nautilus all the power it needed to move through the water. Huge pumps filled and emptied (排空)tanks of air and water to make the Nautilussinkor rise.

After we got to the engine room, Captain Nemo showed me the engine and explained how it worked. The Nautilus was seventy meters long and eight meters wide. It had a cylindrical(圆柱形的) shape with points on each end and weighed 1,500 tons. "It's a wonderful ship!" I exclaimed(惊叫). "I love it as if it were my child," he replied.

"How did you build it in secret?" I asked. "All the parts were made in different countries. I used different names each time I placed an order. I took all the parts to a desert island, and my workmen put them together. Then, we burned our workshops." "It must have cost a fortune!(大笔的钱)" I exclaimed.

"Millions of dollars," he replied. "However, I have billions!"

Do you know what a resolution(决心) is? It's a kind of promise. Most of the time, we make promises to other people. For example, "Mum, I promise I'm going to tidy my room when I get back from school." However, promises you make to yourself are resolutions, and the most common kind is New Year's resolutions. The start of the year is often a time for making resolutions. When we make resolutions at the beginning of the year, we hope that we are going to improve our lives. Some people write down their resolutions and plans for the coming year. This helps to remember their resolutions. Others tell their family and friends about their wishes and plans.

There are different kinds of resolutions. Some are about physical health. For example, some people promise themselves they are going to start an exercise programme or eat less fast food. Many resolutions have to do with self-improvement. These are about making yourself a better person. Some people might say they are going to take up a hobby like painting or taking photos, or learn to play the guitar. Some resolutions have to do with better planning, like making a weekly plan for schoolwork. For example, a student may have to find more time to study.

Although there are differences, most resolutions have one thing in common. People hardly ever keep them! There are good reasons for this. Sometimes the resolutions may be too difficult to keep. Sometimes people just forget about them. For this reason, some people say the best resolution is to have no resolutions! How about you? Will you make any resolutions next year?
