There are so many expressions in American English that sound enjoyable but are not. When someone says they have to "face the music", it does not mean they are going to a concert. "Facing the music" means to accept the punishment(惩罚) of an action.

For example, "I can't face another night of camping! It's cold and rainy. "or" In life, you must face your fears. " Face used in this way is very common. Back to "facing the music", imagine a friend asks you to take care of her expensive sports car. She gives you the key and says, "Thanks so much for watching my car while I'm away. But there's one thing. Please, do not drive it. It is an extremely(极其) fast car. " You want to show off(炫耀) to some friends. So, you drive it around town one night. As bad luck would have it, you lose control of the car and drive it into a stop sign. Bang!

When your friend returns, you must tell her what you have done and "face the music". It could be losing her friendship or paying to repair her car – or both. Whatever the music is, you must face it.

To "take your medicine" means to accept the results from something bad you have done. And if someone says, "You made your bed. Now lie in it. ", they mean you created a bad situation and now you have to experience the results!

A. But you do not listen.

B. "Face the music" is a good example.

C. The "music" here is the result of your action.

D. Americans often use the word "face" in this way.

E. There are other American expressions that mean the same thing as "face the music".

从方框中选出适当的句子补全短文,使短文意思通顺,结构完整。

B. Facial recognition technology has several advantages.

C. Such technology is really quite safe.

D. It can quickly confirm a person's identity.

E. And we know that no two faces are exactly the same.

Humans have little difficulty recognizing (识别)each other. We may not recall a name, but we can usually remember if we've seen a face. Even twins look a little different. Each human face is truly special. So it is a good way to confirm (确认)a person's identity (身份) by seeing his face. And now we've invented machines that are able to recognize faces at a fast speed.

Governments, train stations and police services are using facial recognition (人脸识另U) technology. So a wanted criminal can quickly be picked out of millions of people. It only needs a database (数据库)with images (影像).

Common people, too, are using facial recognition to unlock their phones, their computers. According to Apple, for example, there is only one chance in a million that someone else's face could unlock your iPhone. So you don't need to worry about its safety.

It can be done in a minute, and we don't need to memorize passwords any more. Whafs more, it's not necessary to touch the machine, especially during the COVID-19 outbreak. The device usually costs little, so it is can be used widely.

The worries are mainly about people's privacy (隐私).Nowadays we can see more and more cameras in public-and-private places. This means people can be watched and recognized wherever they go and whatever they do.

My mother is cool—much cooler than most people. I give her full credit for (把…归功于) making me the person who I am today.

Being hopeful is the key to turning things around.

No matter how hard things got, my mom could always joke about them. It has taught me things are never, ever, end-of-the-world kind of bad. I'm sure this has made me a more relaxed person.

My mother made her own clothes she felt like wearing. Soon enough, people asked her to make clothes, and it turned into a full time business. That shows me how you can set up your own business by expressing yourself truthfully.

Imagination has no end.

As a person full of creativity, my mother always encouraged us to do imaginative things for enjoyment and discouraged TV. We dressed up in costumes, drew pictures, and sang at the top of our lungs.

Independence is important.

My mom has always pushed me towards becoming independent. Not for her good, but for mine. Because of this, I grow up to be completely independent.

Mistakes are OK as long as you learn from them.

Growing up, I've made my fair share of mistakes. Instead of saying "l told you so", my mom always let me work things out myself.

For all that you've done and everything that you are—thank you, Mom!

A. Today, l am a very fun person to be with.

B. She was also there to help me pick up the pieces, if I ever needed help.

C. Self-expression leads to self-achievement.

D. I made my own decisions without her trying to manage me.

E. To thank her, I'd like to share some of the things she taught me.
