Four of my friends and I gathered at our favorite restaurant1 Anna's birthday. We were all having a good time when suddenly Julia said, "Hey! Let's go to 2 house and party on!"

"I'm not sure if it's a good idea," I said. I looked to the others for support, but it 3 they were thinking about going to Julia's house, because they didn't know4 to say "no" to Julia. Julia always tries to bully(欺负)the rest of us. She knew that we would all get into trouble with our parents if we left the restaurant. But that didn't 5 her.

"Don't forget Anna's mother will 6 the birthday cake at 8:30," I said, "We should7 until Anna's mother arrives!"

"Don't be silly. She'll find us," Julia said, laughing, like it was no big deal.

"My mother is8 here to pick me up," I lied, not wanting to tell her I knew my mother wouldn't allow me to go.

"Stay here by yourself," Julia said, "The rest of us are going." Then she began saying bad words. I felt tears coming to my eyes, so I ran to the bathroom. I felt so sad,9 alone. It's really10 to go against(反对)your friends, especially when you're hoping to be popular with them. A moment later, Amanda came in and said, "Julia is just that11 . I agree with you. If we get out right now, maybe we can persuade (劝说) the others to stay."

"I'm staying here with Susan," Amanda said as soon as we12 to the table. Then she said something I hadn't thought. "If I 13 , I'll get into trouble with my parents, so let's take Susan's advice."

Anna looked happy again as she said, "My mother wouldn't agree, either. I will stay with you two.""Okay, I'll stay, too." Ellie said.

"Well, I'm not going alone. I have to stay! Oh!" Julia said.

I was 14 it was so simple. None of the girls left and I knew it was because Amanda supported me. I guess it's true that there's strength(力量)in numbers.15 can influence(影响) each other, for good or bad.

As we all know, people usually cannot eat anything on a bus. But can you imagine(想象)that one day, you can have hot pot on a bus? Isn't it exciting?

This May, Chengdu launched China's first hot pot bus tour(旅行).On the red bus, people could have hot pot with their family and friend and see the city's beautiful sights(风景)at night at the same time.

The special bus only ran for a month, from May 20th to June 19th. It started from the busy Chunxi Road at 7 p.m. every day. Then the bus passed through Taikoo Li.Lan Kwai Fong, Wangping Street, 339 TV Tower and Tianfu Square, and went back to Chunxi Road in the end. It took people about 90 minutes to finish the tour. People needed to buy a ticket on the Internet(网络)before they got on the bus. Each ticket cost 89 yuan and included food for 2-3 people and a tour guide service(导游服务).

On the bus, there were only eight dining tables but no any pots. Cooks in a famous hot pot restaurant cooked the food first and then brought it to the people on the bus. So it was safe for people to enjoy their meals on the bus. When people enjoyed the delicious hot pot, the guide told them about Chengdu's hot pot history and stories of famous sights along the roads. So people wouldn't feel bored(无聊)in the whole trip.

The hot pot bus tour was very popular in Chengdu. From the young to the old, lots of people visited the city in such a different way. Many local people couldn't even get the tickets!

One day a man saw an old lady standing by her expensive car, clearly in need of help. So he stopped his old truck and got out. Although he was smiling, the old lady was worried. Was he going to hurt her? He didn't look safe.

The man could see that she was frightened, so in his friendliest voice he said, "I'm here to help you, madam. Why don't you wait in the car where it's warm? By the way, my name is Bryan Anderson." Bryan quickly fixed the car and the lady thanked him. Then she asked how much she should pay him.

But Bryan wanted no money. He was just giving a hand to someone in trouble. This was normal for him. He said, "If you really want to repay me, next time you see someone in need, help them and think of me."

After saying goodbye, the lady continued down the road until she reached a small café where she decided to stop for something to eat. As the pretty waitress took her order, the lady noticed she was nearly eight months pregnant (怀孕) . Although the waitress looked tired, she was very kind. As the lady was going to pay the $10 bill she remembered Bryan's words.

She paid with a hundred-dollar bill. But when the waitress returned with the change, the lady was gone. On the table she saw a small note. There were tears in her eyes when she read it: "Somebody once helped me the way I'm helping you. If you want to pay me back, continue being kind to others." Under the note were nine more $100 bills.

Was the old lady an angel? The waitress was so excited that she called her husband to tell him the news. "Bryan Anderson my dear…you're not going to believe what just happened…"

In December 2022, people in Shenzhen found that water ran more slowly from their taps. The government said the city was facing its most serious water shortage ever.

Some other cities in the southern part of China, like Chengdu and Guangzhou, are also becoming "thirsty", The Paper reported. Compared(相比) with northern areas, southern areas have more rain and are close to more rivers and lakes. So why are they still short on water?

In big cities like Shenzhen and Guangzhou, populations(人口) are growing fast. As a result, people and factories need more and more water. Each person in Shenzhen has less than 200 cubic meters of water each year. It's l/12 of the country's average(平均水平). According to the United Nations, it is an "absolute water shortage" when the number is below 500 cubic meters.

Climate change(气候变化) is making the water problem worse. For example, most cities in Guangdong depend on(依赖于) the Dongjiang River as their main source(来源)of water. In 2022, the river was reported to be drying up. Because of climate change, there's also less snow in the mountains of Tibet. The snow has long been the source of water for many areas in China. Those mountains might provide less water in the future.

There are other reasons for water shortages. For example, water pollution makes it harder to get clean drinking water. Factories and farms don't use water efficiently(有效地). Some cities have enough rainfall, but don't have big lakes or reservoirs(水库)to store water. The water just goes into the sea.
