Do animals have emotions (情感)? My wife and I disagree about this question. We disagree about other things too, but those are not things I want to talk about in this article. The question I want to talk about is "Do animals have emotions?" Have I already said that? Oh yes, it's in the title. Never mind. I don't think animals have emotions, but my wife thinks they do have emotions. In fact, I think my wife thinks that animals do have emotions, but I don't. Oh dear, this is very confusing.

In our house we have the following pets: three lizards, a cat, three chickens and a rabbit. Actually, the chickens and the rabbit live in the garden, not in the house. The lizards don't laugh, the cat doesn't cry, the chickens don't smile and the rabbit doesn't shout, so how can they have emotions? I have told sad stories to the lizards, but they never cry. I have told jokes to the cat, but it never laughs. I have given beer to the chickens, but they don't smile. I have told the rabbit to his face that he is stupid, but he doesn't get angry. On the other hand, the cat gets angry when I pull its tail, the chickens look scared when I run after them, the lizards fight each other if I don't give them enough food and the rabbit kicks me when I try to pick him up. So perhaps they do have emotions. But these aren't real emotions; they are just animal instinct (本能).

In England, people even think that different animals have different characters. They say, for example, that lions are brave, dogs are loyal and cats are independent. But it's easy to be brave when you are the biggest animal in the forest, and would dogs be so loyal if they could use a tin (罐头) opener? Perhaps cats are just too stupid to work together. If I am feeling sad, the cat, the lizards, the rabbit and the chickens never do anything to help me. They never give me a word of advice. They don't even make me a cup of tea, which is what people often do if someone is feeling sad. If you want me to believe that animals have emotions, send me a photo of a chicken crying.

 根据短文内容,从选项中选出能填入文中空白处的最佳选项,选项中有一项为多余选项。

The traditional Chinese solar calendar divides the year into 24 solar terms. Awakening of Insects (惊蛰) falls on March 6 and ends on March 20 this year.

Animals sleeping in winter are wakened by spring thunder (雷) and that the earth begins to come back to life.

Here are some things you may not know about Awakening of Insects.

The Awakening of Insects is an important time for farmers.  During this period, most parts of China experience the quickest rise in temperatures and there is an increase in sunshine, which provides good natural conditions.

According to ancient Chinese folklore, a white tiger is the creature that brings bad luck.  When practicing this old custom, people draw the white tiger on paper, and then paint pig's blood and pork on its mouth. This means the tiger is fed so that it would not eat people, avoiding bad luck.

They swim from deep water to shallow water in search of food, mating and bearing young. It is a good time for fishing. Fishing can provide mental and physical relaxation, especially for people living in the city.

A. It is widely seen as the beginning of the busiest time for farming.

B. Around the Awakening of Insects, some animals wake up, and so do fish.

C. So people offer food to the white tiger during the Awakening of Insects to protect themselves.

D. Awakening of Insects means a rise in temperature and increased rainfall.

E. Fishing in a lake, bathing in the sunlight and enjoying the singing birds make for a perfect weekend in spring.

F. The tiger is the king of the forest and often helps people out of trouble.

On March 5, 1963, an article by Chairman Mao Zedong was published in the newspaper, paying tribute (向……致敬) to a young soldier, named Lei Feng, who died in an accident in 1962 at the age of 22. Since then, March 5 has been marked as "Learn From Lei Feng Day" and Lei has become a cultural icon (偶像).

Right after studying the article along with his partners that day, Wu Hongyuan, a songwriter who was then 33, was given a task to write a song, echoing (附和) Mao's article and encouraging people to learn from the young soldier's spirit.

On March 3, two days before the annual Learn From Lei Feng Day, Wu, 93 now, appeared in Beijing to announce a new project, calling for people to write their own versions (改编) of lyrics for the song, as a way to remind people especially the younger people, to keep the spirit of Lei alive.

"When I wrote the song, I was a young songwriter. I was very excited about the task, but I didn't know where to start. So I took all the materials about Lei Feng that I could think of, such as newspaper reports, and I soon came up with the lyrics. The process was smooth and natural," Wu recalls.

"As a songwriter, I wanted to write songs to express my respect and love for those heroes. So, when I started to write the song for Lei Feng, I was full of ideas and passion. "

(A) He has written more than 100 songs during his life and he considers the song about Lei as one of his favorites.

"I didn't expect that the song would be enjoyed by so many people and performed for 60 years. (B)    It shows that the spirit of Lei Feng has a great influence on people in different times," he adds.

With the new project, Wu calls for people to explain their understanding of the spirit of Lei, which received warm welcome. People, who work in different fields, such as transportation drivers, as well as young students, shared their versions of songs.

Every night at a village inn (酒馆) in Southwest China's Yunnan province, the owner and local performers lead a group of travelers to sing and dance around a campfire.

It's one part of a life that the manager, Yu Wulin, had never imagined. The 47-year-old man used to be a farmer when he was younger, like most of the people in the poor village then. Now he runs two well-known inns with his wife in the village, which is now a famous place for tourists.

"Our people didn't have any business sense," he said. "I never expected that I would be the first person to get rich by starting my own business in the village. "

Yu's story began in 1996 when he was chosen to take part in a fair in Shanghai to show the local culture and traditions. That trip helped to open up the eyes of the then-20-year-olds.

At the end of the 1990s, more and more travelers from across the country began visiting the village. They would hike during the day and stay in the village overnight. Those visitors chose to stay at Yu's home because he was the only person who was able to speak Putonghua in the village back then.

As time passed, more and more travelers chose to stay with Yu and his wife, who cooked local food and prepared traditional songs and dances for them, free of charge. People began suggesting to Yu that he start an inn so he could receive more visitors. He agreed after consideration.

In 2001, with the help of his relatives and friends, he opened the village's first inn with 8 beds. Yu and his wife became more well-known for the service they provided and caught the attention of even more visitors. Some of them even lent money to the couple to help them upgrade the inn.

The house with eight beds became two bigger ones with a total of 33 rooms in 2016. "In fact, it is very hard to run the inns—being busy from morning to night every day," he said. "But, doing this work has allowed me to make a large number of good friends from across the country who have helped me, encouraged me and warmed me. That has made me feel happy. "

Yu's success has motivated other villagers to follow in his footsteps. After learning about the business from Yu and his wife, some started their own businesses. Laomudeng now has 33 inns and restaurants, which have attracted more and more guests from various parts of the country.

During the seven-day Spring Festival holiday this year, nearly 10,000 people enjoyed the scenery, food and traditional dance performances in the village. "Our village is getting better, and there are an increasing number of visitors. Most of our villagers have gone out of poverty (贫穷) through their tourism businesses," Yu said. "I, so I will stick with it no matter how hard it may be or how tired I am. "
