Michael lived with disabilities in his life. He seldom talked with others. Starting at the age of 21,he looked for jobs in different companies, but all of them turned him down. He was especially sad because he doesn't have a job to support himself.
This caused Michael to do something for himself. He took business classes through the Rhode Island Developmental Disability Center. Once he completed the program,he opened a coffee shop. Within three weeks, the coffee shop became one of the most popular places in the city. Michael and Sheila saw the impact(影响),and they realized that the best thing about a coffee shop was its sense of community.
People come in,and they communicate with each other and become close. It is also a great chance for people to learn about people with disabilities and what they can do just like other people if they're given time to shine.
Sheila believed opening the shop helped Michael a lot. She saw how he stood higher than before. He lit up the room with his smile and greeted every customer with a smile. She also considered the coffee shop as a great chance to improve Michael's social skills. Michael was glad to help to sell products made by his peers. You could find baked goods, handmade bags, and clothes made by his friends who also have disabilities.
Michael wanted to move forward, and he aimed to hire(雇用)people with special needs. When asked by others how he felt after being refused by many companies,he said he felt helpless. This was something that Michael didn't want other people with disabilities to feel and experience. Sheila felt like what Michael did was very helpful for other people who had trouble finding a job because of their disabilities.
